I locked eyes with the icy-blue glare penetrating my soul at the far end of the table, and took a cautious step back.

Lorenzo did not look happy.

You’ve done it now, Kya.

The doors closed behind me, sending a resounding boom through the room. I was the only one that jumped.

“Tell me something, Pet.”

I swallowed past the lump in my throat. Suddenly, the room didn’t seem so big.

“Was there something wrong with the food I sent?” Lorenzo tossed a napkin on the table and sat back. “Or are you purposely trying to piss me off?”

Maybe, just a little. Which was clearly a stupid idea.

“I… Uh… I mean… I wasn’t hungry.”That’s a good excuse, let’s go with that.

“That’s not what he asked you.”

I squeaked and jumped back from the deep tone rumbling through the room. The guy at the head of the table, and closest to me, was by far the scariest.

There was a deep set scowl on his face, surrounded by an aura of authority that everyone in the room seemed to respect. Including Carmine.

Who I was pretty sure was a serial killer.

“Told you she was a skittish little thing.” The one I recognized as Tobias smiled and shot me a wink. “That’s okay, I like ‘em skittish.”

I jerked back, eyeing the smirk on Tobias’s face. There was something dark under the playful glint in his stare that I definitely didn’t wasn’t a closer look at. My knees were already shaking from being in the same room as the four of them, who I assumed were all brothers. Or at least related.

They looked too similar. Especially Lorenzo and the scary one. They were practically twins.

“Come here, Pet.” When I didn’t move, Lorenzo barked out, “Now.”

Angry or not, his voice was welcome. I’d have happily scooted over there and hid in his chest, if I could move. My legs were frozen by the men staring at me.

This was the type of situation one should run from, except the door was closed and I doubted Jerk-face would open it for me. Would they follow me if I hid under the table?

“Your master gave you an order, little girl.” The scary one sat forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “I suggest you follow it.”

My heart hammered painfully in my chest. I didn’t want to find out what would happen if I couldn’t get my legs to move. Whether It was driven by fear, or sheer determination, my foot eventually lifted, taking a very small, very careful step.

After that, it was easy. I continued forward, moving much quicker than I intended.

It seemed abnormally quiet in here. My bare feet padded on the floor, echoing like a herd of elephants. Bitchface McGee snickered when I went past her. I paused long enough to shoot her a glare.

Might’ve said something to her, if someone hadn’t cleared their throat impatiently. I wasn’t sure which one did it. Didn’t really matter. I was quite obviously screwed. All I could do was hope Lorenzo would take some mercy on me.

Any hope of that went out the window when Carmine decided to speak.

“Your pet listens to Jackson better than she does you.”

So that was Jackson.

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed. “I see that.”

My stomach flipped. I could feel the rage coming off him.

Now would be the time to run, Kya. Maybe Jerk-face will be nice and open the door for you.
