“Nah, my mom was all up and through here. I gave that woman my card, and she went to town. I learned that day that if I didn’t want to go into debt, I was going to need to just send her a couple of dollars to spend.”

My eyes widened. I honestly thought it was his late wife, but clearly, there was a lot I didn’t know.

“You thought Veronica decorated it, huh?” he questioned, with his hands clasped in front of him.

I nodded with a soft smile.

“I did. I can see all the feminine touches in here a woman knows.”

He walked over and wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me flush against him, then placed a kiss against the length of my neck.

“I’m glad you like it. I hope you know this little girl is about to run you ragged,” he said, close to my ear.

“You'd better hope I have a little energy left for you,” I told him with a smile.

“I’m not concerned.”

Before I could respond, Esa was rushing over with a few of her toys in hand.

“Let’s go so I can show you my room,” Esa announced.

Doc cleared his throat and glared at Esa. “Now, is that how you approach an adult while they’re talking?” he asked.

Esa’s smile dropped, and I instantly felt for her. But I didn’t want to interject. I knew she was just excited to have me at her house. I also knew she couldn’t leave her manners at the door because of excitement, so I kept my mouth closed.

“No, sir. I’m sorry, Ms. Sinclair.”

“It’s okay, sweetheart. I know you’re excited.”

She smiled at me.

“Now try it again, baby girl,” Doc told her, softer this time.

She nodded and adjusted her toes against her chest.

“Excuse me,” she said in a soft, sweet tone.

“Yes, ma’am,” I responded.

“Would you like to see my room and play with my toys with me?” she asked with a smile.

“Absolutely,” I told her, then held my hand out for her to take.

Esa glanced up at Doc, who nodded with a smile for her to go ahead. Not wasting a moment, she grabbed my hand and rushed off towards the stairs with me in tow. I looked over in his direction, and he was smiling.

“Have fun. I’ll try to get a few things together for dinner.”

My brow lifted because I wasn’t sure if we had talked about whether he could cook, but at this moment, I couldn’t worry about it. I followed Esa up the large staircase and down a longhallway until she disappeared into her room. The short distance between the steps and her room, I had passed three others.

This man’s house was large. I now understand why Doctors work so damn much, outside of the obvious. It was to afford all of this. But he never came across as unappreciative. It might have been why I was so shocked when I saw his house for the first time. He was arrogant, but not the arrogance I would attach to a man owning a home of this stature. It’s clear I had built a lot of preconceived notions about him. I had a lot to learn.

“Ms. Sinclair, this is my room. Do you like it?” she asked instantly, doing a whole spin.

I couldn’t help but smile. I noticed the many pictures around the room that she had drawn. Her dad even had a little section in her room designated for her to draw. It was the cutest thing. Her room was colored pink and purple.

I took a seat on the edge of her princess canopy-style bed.

“It’s beautiful, Esa.”
