He released a sigh, then looked in my direction for a moment. “I didn’t expect to run into you, let alone build a connection. This is my life, Skye. I have rarely ever gotten to be Knox with anyone. But with you, that was the closest I’ve ever gotten to feeling human. Even though my name was Brodrick to you.”
“I still don’t think you fully grasp the situation. I just killed someone back there. I need to know what kind of danger am I really in? Who is after me?”
Knox leaned forward and clasped his hands in front of him. I waited briefly for him to answer me.
“I can’t tell you out here. Give me some time to get us into an enclosed space that we can control. I promise I will answer anything you want to know, at least the things I can tell you without putting you in more danger than you’re already in. Just give me a chance to make this all make sense.”
I wanted to give a rebuttal, but the pleading look in his eyes stopped me cold. For the first time, I was at a loss for words. So, I sat back against the seats and waited for instructions on what to do next. I just wanted to get back to my normal life and if playing it their way for a moment was the way to do that, I was willing to do it.
Finally, VC knocked against the window, alerting us of his presence. Knox then reached back into the truck to grab ablack duffle bag. I watched as he unzipped it, then pulled out a baseball cap and a large oversized sweatshirt. He handed them over to me.
“Put that on.”
I rotated the cap in my hands, because I would never wear this normally. I figured he had a good enough reason for me to be putting it on, so I quickly stuffed my hair into the cap, then slipped on the sweatshirt. Once we all had on what we needed to wear, they drove the truck around the parking lot to the darkest corner of the lot.
We got out of the truck and both of the men blocked me from a view of anyone seeing me as we walked to the room we would stay in. My eyebrow rose as I thought spending the night with both of them. I barely knew Knox, and I damn sure didn’t know a thing about VC, but I didn’t want to complain and make things harder.
The moment we stepped inside of the room, there were two full beds dressed in the usual motel floral sheets. My eyes fell upon every stain this room had. I could only imagine what the damn bathroom looked liked. I looked up at the popcorn ceiling and said a silent prayer.
I walked further into the room and pulled back the sheets of the bed to check the headboard for bed bugs. If I was going to have to lay in this nasty ass motel, I wasn’t coming back with bites too. I shivered at the thought.
“What are you doing?” Knox asked from behind me.
I turned to look over my shoulder to see VC staring with a smirk along with Knox, looking beyond confused. I stood up straight and gripped my hips.
“I’m checking for bed bugs. Please don’t tell me you were going to just lay down and act like it’s super clean in here?”
VC chuckled before covering it with a cough and pulling another room key from his pocket.
“I’m going to leave y’all to it. I have my own damn room. Plus, I have some damage control to do. Today was too damn close, and I’m not trying to wake up with anymore surprises,” VC said before leaving the room.
Now it was just us.
I was stuck. It was crazy how beautiful she looked in some shit that didn’t belong to her. Not to mention, knowing she knew her way around a gun made me relax even more. These were things we didn’t talk about when we were on the island. To be honest, she never went too deep into her home life. I was assuming she wanted a fresh start, or at least a break from it all.
I could understand that. It was one reason I did what I did, but now I felt as if I jacked everything up. I wasn’t trying, but in the process of trying to end my life, I was ending a woman whose spirit made me believe I could matter.
I cleared my throat and turned to head for the bathroom. I locked the door behind me, then turned on the faucet, allowing the water to fall into my hands before splashing my face. I needed to clear my mind, but with this woman in my space, I knew that was going to be a rare possibility. I should go stayin the room with VC’s annoying ass and give her some space to herself. Today was already a lot.
The moment I snatched open the door, she was standing on the other side. No longer was she wearing the hat or the oversized sweatshirt. But she had her reddish orange hair down and a tank top that accented her full breasts out of the top. I ran my tongue over my lower lip.
I had to close my eyes briefly to relax, because the longer she stood in my presence, the cloudier my mind became, and the harder my dick got. I opened my eyes, and she took a few steps closer to me until her harden nipples brushed against me. I released a breath, then reached out to tip her head back.
“I’m holding on to my respect by a thread. Don’t test it out and find yo’ ass bent over. You don’t have to do that to get what you want. What can I do for you, baby?”
Her eyes widened at my brashness. I craned my head to the side and took a few steps away from the heat of her body. Then I clasped my hands behind my back to wait out her demands. She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms against her chest.
“I need clothes and things to wash myself with. When you kidnapped me, my things were on a flight back home, not here.”
I walked around her into the open space and made my way to the door. I could feel her following close behind me, so I stopped to give her my undivided attention. Her hands were now gripping her hips with the deepest frown adorning her face. I couldn’t help it but to smile.
“Do we have another problem?” I asked.
I didn’t know why I was enjoying her and all this mouth, but I couldn’t get enough. I leaned against the door frame and stuffed my hands into my pockets.
“No, I’m coming with you.”
I laughed and shook my head. “Actually, you’re not.”
