Two nominations in less than twelve months is no accident.

You turned a sinking ship into a standard.

Tell your team I said congratulations.

G.

At lunch, while I watch my team come alive under the praise of the management team and co workers that come by mainly for food but also to hand out great jobs I send a text to Brooks:

Tonight still good?

Wouldn't miss it.

I do a happy little chair wiggle.

Part of me is torn. It feels like Grayson should be here too. They both see me, but in such different ways. One sees my brain, my drive, my need to be more. The other sees the things I didn’t even realize I was missing, to be cared for, to be adored.

Chapter thirty-four

Grayson, Friday 11:30 a.m.

Idon’t enjoy being left out.

From my office, I watch her laugh at her phone. I already know who she’s texting.

Brooks is getting comfortable.

She’s slipping.

So I slip into the system. It takes ten minutes to schedule a meeting. Real, but pointless. Late enough to ruin her plans.

Chapter thirty-five

Reagan, Friday 12:15 p.m.

Calendar ping.

Subject: Strategic Planning Work Session Time: 6:30 p.m.

Location: 22nd Floor Conference, All Department Heads Required to Attend

I blink.

Who the hell schedules a meeting for a Friday night? I take a screenshot of my calendar and fire off a message to Brooks.

Are you seeing this bullshit?

Sabotaged.

I stare at the screen, annoyance curdling into somethingsharper.

Then maybe it's time I play dirty too.

The problem with two such different views? They play differently too. One grabs on tighter. The other pulls away, striking just to prove they still can.

Chapter thirty-six

Reagan, Friday 07:55 p.m.
