In between, I continue my classes at LCC, and Maddox does his cybersecurity work from home.

But all I want to do is curl up in bed next to her and soothe myself with the sound of her breathing.

I give her space, though. Poe insists we do, even though the three of us are dying with anticipation to be near her.

Piper, in her own way, is like a feral cat. If you get too close, she’ll run.

So, we offer her the space and time she needs.

“I’m going to kill her parents,” Maddox announces the second day she’s here. “I really am.”

“There’s a more convenient way to take them down,” I say, not wanting my packmate to end up in prison. “I wouldn’t be surprised if her father is committing some type of tax fraud.”

Maddox scoffs. “Even then, he would end up in a fancy prison. We have to do something worse than that. Maybe I can hack his bank records and move all his money into cat rescues around the world or something.”

“He probablyiscommitting tax fraud,” Piper’s amused voice calls, and she pads into the living room, dressed in paw print leggings and a black loose shirt. Color has returned to her beautiful face, and her aroma is sweet and lemony. “But it would be more trouble than it’s worth.”

Hate is a strong word for me; it truly is. My parents were emotionally absent, and at times, neglectful, but they weren’t downright evil the way Piper’s parents are.

It’s unforgivable in my eyes, and it’s safe to say I fuckinghatethem after what I heard in the hospital.

“Hey, baby,” Maddox says smoothly, shutting his laptop and moving it to the coffee table in front of him. “Is everything okay?”

“How are you feeling?” I add.

I don’t want to sound as obsessive as Maddox, but Ineedto know.

I’ll take whatever information about herself my Omega wants to give me.

“Better,” she sighs. “I’m ready to visit the rescue today.”

Of course, I knew an illness couldn’t keep her down for long.

That rescue has her whole heart, just like she has mine.

“Iwantto go back to work,” she adds, heading to the couch, “but I know my doctor’s note said I have to wait a week. So, I guess I’ll just visit.”

“Damn right, you’re going to listen to those doctors,” Maddox growls. “Try to work at the rescue all day and I’ll kidnap you.”

I turn to him. “Okay, that’s a bit much,” I say, but Maddox smirks.

He loves toying with Piper, and the scowl she gives him only makes him grin.

“Fine,” she huffs. “Well, I was going to ask if you wanted to go with me.”

She probably shouldn’t be driving either, but I know she’s too proud to ask us for that much help.

I wish she would. I would doanythingfor her, anything she asked, but I know it’s still difficult for her to accept help.

“Of course,” I say. “We are both planning on going later anyway.”

“Still?” she asks, frowning. “I talked to Blair, and they have more than enough help. You don’t have to do all that anymore.”

“I truly enjoy it, Piper. I don’t have class today, so I can make the trip. Besides, I miss Snow.”

“Snow?” she echoes.

“Oh, the white kitten we dropped off that we found in the backyard.”
