LEXI

Ican’t stop shivering. Even in the hot shower at Lutan’s suite in the embassy. Shock, maybe, but I’m safe now.

“Lutan?” I call out as my knees begin to buckle.

He dives in, ignoring the fact that he’s getting soaked, and grabs me before I sink to the floor. “You are a stubborn woman. Why aren’t you using the chair?”

“Sitting naked in the shower in the chair is hardly sexy.”

“Do you wish to be sexy or clean?”

“Both.” I try to smile, but my teeth are chattering too hard.

He wraps me in a fluffy white towel.

“Now, we have some fun?” I ask as he carries me to the bed.

“Now, you sleep.”

“Wesleep. You must be tired, too.”

“I can go days without sleep if necessary.”

“But it’s not necessary.”

“I should speak with Hunzu.”

“Stop avoiding me,” I say as I grab his arm and pull him down on top of me. He puts his weight on his arms to either side of me and leans in for a kiss which I gladly accept. “I’m starting to think this heartmate thing you spoke about is real. But I’m not the one fighting it. You are.”

“You’ve had a shock and you’re enamored with the person who rescued you, nothing more.”

“Don’t dismiss me.Us. We had a wonderful time last night, and this morning, then everything went to hell. Don’t let what Moses and those other assholes did come between us.”

“I have feelings for you, Lexi, very strong ones, but I’ve already endangered you enough.”

“You never put me in danger. I did that all on my own. That, and whoever arranged to kidnap me.”

His brows furrow in question. “Wasn’t that Moses?”

“Moses’s men kidnapped me, but I don’t think he was behind it. Though he used me to draw you and the other warriors away from the Embassy.”

“You know about the attack on the embassy?”

“Moses likes to talk. Or brag, rather, about how he outsmarted us. Virtue, his second in command, kidnapped me, but he seemed to be working with another guy. Moses chewed Virtue out when we reached the camp. And then an hour later, a man showed up and argued with Moses. I nicknamed the guy Mystery Man because of how he was dressed. He wore a hat pulled low over his face, a mask, and he was covered in layers, from his head down to his steel-tipped boots. I don’t know who he was, but there was something familiar about him and the way he carried himself. I’m sure I’ve seen him somewhere.”

“Layers like you wear?”

“I guess, but I’m pretty sure it was a guy. His frame was too big to be a woman.”

“Where did you get the idea to dress in layers to hide your identity, Lexi?”

“From my father. He makes a point of dressing like the locals when we go to another country for his job. He says it’s better to blend in than stand out.” I freeze as the realization dawns on me. “My father would not have me kidnapped.” I shake my head fervently. “He’d never put me in danger like that, Lutan.”

Lutan’s horns rise, but his eyes soften for me.

I narrow my eyes, watching him closely. “Why did you insist I come back here with you instead of going home?”

“I’m a selfish male. I needed to know you’d be fine.”
