“I would never lie to you,” he says, his breath caressing my face. My lips part, wanting to taste him once more.
“I must go.”
“You’re leaving?
“I have criminals to hunt. Blasters to retrieve, before they compromise Earth’s security more than they already have.”
“I can help you,” I whisper.
His head snaps away from mine and dark blue eyes blaze with anger. “You will stay away from this investigation. And me, Lexi. Do you understand?”
“I… No, I don’t.”
“It’s dangerous. I’m dangerous, female. You will keep your distance.” He glances at the windows. “The sun has risen. Take the gun and return to your life. Avoid the Brotherhood.”
“And you?”
“Above all else, avoid me. I don’t wish you to end up like Narzan.” The sound of the wood crate scraping against the tile floor echoes as Lutan uncovers the opening. He lifts his head one last time, his dark blue eyes meeting mine. “My apologies, Lexi. I should never have invited you to the ball. Be well, sholani. You will not see me again.”
With that, he tucks his horns back and squeezes through the hole, disappearing into the tunnel of debris. A howling wind sends a plume of dirt from the alley into my hideaway. The wind ends suddenly as he seals the other end of the tunnel.
He’s gone. The silence filling this huge space, reminding me how empty and alone this place is without Lutan. Just like my heart...
CHAPTERTWELVE
LUTAN
Hunzu lifts the top off the last crate beneath the tarp we removed while I guard his back against anyone who might enter the hangar. I’m pleased he joined me tonight, as my focus has been wandering since I walked away from Lexi. She consumes more of my thoughts, waking and sleeping. At times I wonder if I made the right decision to part from her instead of claiming her as my sholani, but then I find myself up against dangerous criminals. She is safer away from me and the life I lead.
“Empty like the others,” Hunzu reports, thrusting the lid aside. The wood falls to the concrete floor with a thud, reverberating through the cold building. “The hangar fits the description Moses gave us.”
I peer inside. Straw. I dig deep, to ensure I haven’t missed anything, and retrieve a handful of tightly wrapped vegetation. One sniff is enough.
“More drugs. You can notify the human law officers if you wish, but it’s not worth going through the remaining crates here.” We’ve only opened three of the twenty in the hangar, but there’s no sign of any blasters here. I thrust the drugs back in the crate. “Moses is drekking with us.”
“Or his intel is old and his partners are a step ahead of us. Shall we search the other crates?”
“No. Og’dals would never ship blasters like this. Even with the firing mechanism disabled, there are multiple ways a blaster can discharge and start a fire in such flammable packing material.”
“But humans might. They’re rather ignorant when it comes to the hazards of a blaster, but that doesn’t mean you should underestimate them, Lutan. Especially those in the Brotherhood. They will kill anyone who stands in their way.”
Images of Lexi come to mind and my horns twist.
“You’re thinking of her, the female,” Hunzu says.
“How did you know?” I haven’t seen her in three days, and never plan to see her again and yet I worry about what will happen to her when I leave Earth given all the crime and dangers here.
He points to my horns. “You care about her, don’t you?”
“You still haven’t told me what happened when you followed her home after I left her,” I say, turning the conversation away from what she means to me.
“You only asked if she got there safely.”
I want to know everything about Lexi, but the more I learn, the harder it will be to leave this planet when I complete my mission. My decision’s already tearing me apart. I cannot forget her heavenly scent or the feel of those curves pressed against me.
Or the way she looked at me. Like she trusted me without question. It’s that type of devotion a male looks for and appreciates in a mate. And the very reason I must avoid her.
“I… wish to know more.”
