“I love you, Lutan.” I say the words with such ease it surprises me. I’m not sure what if anything has changed in these last few days, but I know with my entire being I’m going to marry this man. Nothing and no one can stop me.
I thrust my arms around his neck and weave them through his hair right to those nodes that drive him wild when I caress them. A sexy possessive moan encases me like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s night. Then my sweet alien lifts me, as if I weigh nothing.
Lutan carries me to his bed for a proper goodbye…
CHAPTERTHIRTY-FOUR
LUTAN
“Why did the ZDC order you to cease your investigation?” Hunzu asks when I enter the Zyanthan Embassy on Earth.
I’m eager to see my sholani. It’s been three weeks since she returned to her family. A day after she rejoined them, I followed the lead from the og’dals I’d captured during their delivery in San Francisco, another town on this coast.
The trail led not to Galactic Intelligence as I’d believed it would, but to Karthika, specifically, to three dead beings. Not og’dal but cendagi. Worse than og’dal in many ways. Slavers kidnap and sell beings for money. Cendagiexperimenton their prey.
“With a potential tie between og’dal slavers and cendagi, the ZDC is worried about a potential connection between the Cendagi and the Coalition,” I update Hunzu. “The ZDC is considering sending an operative into Coalition territory.”
“That won’t be an easy feat since Jaizon returned. They will not trust another zyanthan.”
“They didn’t specify zyanthan.”
“Interesting.”
“Either way, I’m to stand down until they give me new orders.”
“What of the person stealing the blasters from Galactic Intelligence?”
“The entire investigation is on hold. Which means I can now claim my sholani formally. Has she returned?”
I squeeze the pendant between finger and thumb. Three weeks I’ve been away from Lexi. Three long, inconceivably lonely weeks.
Every day, I’ve dreamed of holding her again, of listening to her talk about her life and her planet, of hearing the dozens of thoughts she has on how to improve conditions on Earth. Her energy, her hopefulness… I need these in my life. I needher.
I sling my bag of personal belongings over my shoulder as we head up the stairs to the second level. Until Lexi and I decide where we will live, we will stay in my quarters here. We can live here permanently, but she may wish to be closer to her family and her friend Viv.
Hunzu stops at the top of the stairs. “I have not heard from Lexi. She has not returned to the embassy.”
“That is a good sign. It means she and her father have reconciled.”
He grips my shoulder. “You misunderstand. We cannot find her or her family. Their house in Los Angeles has been closed up, as if they don’t plan to return. A small contingent of guards remain on the property, to keep out thieves, but they don’t know anything more than what they’ve been told to do. Guard the property.
My horns rise instantly. “She’s in a country called Japan?—”
“Yes, we’ve checked. No one can find them...”
CHAPTERTHIRTY-FIVE
LUTAN
As I board my ship, my hand runs over the silver heart hanging from my neck. I’ve clutched the pendant so many times during my search for Lexi these past few weeks that I’ve smoothed out the rough edge, the one that was to remain rough until we meet again and formalize our bond as heartmates.
I’ve searched several major cities on Earth, starting in Tokyo, Japan, where I landed illegally to search for my sholani. No one there knew of her or her father. I do not know if they were telling the truth or lying to protect them from me.
They are not in New York City either.
Or Boston.
Dallas.
