“No one will touch you,” I growl with unexpected ferocity.

Her eyes dart right and left. “If I stay here much longer?—”

“No one…” I allow my hand to cup her soft cheek. “I mean it. Absolutely no one will touch you. I will see to it.”

Her smile, as slight as it is, warms me despite how it lacks depth. She’s trying to trust in me, but I have not proven that I keep my word.

My comm vibrates and Hunzu’s face appears on the screen. Relief washes through me. I haven’t lost him too.

Long dark wet hair hangs down my partner’s face and he’s out of breath. “All secure here, Lutan. Drekking males dove into the river basin. Do you need back up?”

“No. I’ll see you back at the embassy. Put them in separate interrogation rooms.” The screen darkens as I end the transmission.

“I’m glad he’s okay,” Lexi says, her expression sincere.

“I appreciate your offer to help me look for Hunzu?—”

“You’re never going to give me that gun, are you?”

I’m considering it, though I shouldn’t be. The blaster I’ll keep as part of my mission but the gun and any other weapons I find during my op should be turned over to the local authorities.

“You made an offer before, Lexi.” Her name rolls from my tongue so naturally I hesitate, long enough that her eyes scrunch together as she studies me. “You said I could have anything I want in exchange for the gun.”

Her lips form a tight line, marring the otherwise confident expression on that beautiful face. She’s been used, this one.

“My request is harmless enough,” I add.

“I’ll be the judge of that.”

“The personnel of my embassy have been invited by your government to a Valentine’s Day ball tomorrow at the Keshi Pearl Hotel and I’m expected to attend. With a female.”

The tightness in her jaw and face melts away and her eyessparkle. “Are you asking me out on a date, Warrior?”

“Not a date, as I understand the ritual of your people. A social gathering. I’m new to Earth and do not know any females. Nor do I understand what is required at this ball. I would appreciate… a guide.”

“A guide, huh?” Her smile widens, and she bounces on her heels, but it’s her eyes that trap me.

Yes, trap. There’s a magnetism to this female that pulls at me, yet I have no desire to escape her. Not in the least.

“I will not expect anything more of you than what is considered customary for the event.”

“Got it. No sex.”

My horns shoot straight up, as does another part of me. The idea of sex with this female appeals to me. Very much. She’s full of fire and surprises, and I can breathe around her.

“I would not turn down sex, female. I’m no fool, especially when an attractive female offers, but I would never insist.”

She tilts her head to the side and scrunches her eyebrows together as that smile disappears. I’ve said something wrong, though I’m not sure what. The ZDC sent me here directly from my last mission, giving me only the time on route to study Earth’s history, current state of affairs, and culture. Even the brightest of warriors can only absorb so much in one week, and I’ve never been good at studying. I’m more of a hands-on learner.

And I’d very much love to have my hands on her.

But I can’t. I’ve made a vow.

“Did I say something improper?”

She stares at me. “You said I’m attractive.”

“You are.”
