Have to get out of here.

Now!

I don’t know what’s creeping me out, but my entire body’s screaming at me to get back to Lutan as soon as possible.

Nearly tripping over myself, I shove the sneakers in my bag along with the rest of the clothing in the open dresser drawer and race into the hallway.

I slam right into McCauley, one of my least favorite guards. The last time I saw him was when I jumped off the bus leaving the Valentine’s Day ball.

“Going somewhere, Miss Barrington?” he asks with a hint of annoyance in his voice.

“None of your business, McCauley.” I shift my bag, and I see something pink float to the floor. “Fuck,” I swear as at myself for not taking an extra half-second to pull the drawstring taut on the duffle.

I bend down to pick up whatever fell. Of course, it has to be a frilly pair of pink pantiesandthey landed on McCauley’s boot. Talk about embarrassing.

I swipe the panties off his boot and find myself staring at a metal tip.

I gasp. A knee jerk reaction that might get me killed.

McCauley yanks me up by my left arm.

I swing with my right and hit his jaw. He doesn’t even move, but my hand’s in pain as the rest of me will be soon enough.

McCauley slams me up against a wall and twists my arm behind me. Pain rockets through my arm and shoulder.

“You should have stayed missing,” he whispers into my ear as he clamps a hand over my mouth and pulls me down the hallway…

CHAPTERTHIRTY-ONE

LUTAN

My horns shoot up for no apparent reason.

Lexi.

I barrel into the corridor and corner the first guard I see. “Where is Lexi?” I demand.

I’ll search this massive home room by room if I must, but fear claws at me like I’ve never experienced before.

He points toward the massive staircase, the type I’d see in a government building back on Zyan, one wide enough for five people to walk astride.

Two, three steps at a time, I race up the stairs.

“Lexi,” I yell out.

No answer.

My heart pounds. She would not ignore me.

One by one, I fling doors open.

“Lu—” her muffled voice carries from down the hall.

A shadow moves. A male’s holding Lexi with a hand clamped over her mouth and a knife to her throat.

“If you harm her, you will die.”

“That’s an empty threat,” the male says. “As I see it, you barged up here and attacked Mr. Barrington’s daughter.”
