Two can play at that.
“I have information. Time sensitive. Answer quickly, Warrior. Let me leave here with the gun and I’ll give you information that will save a life.”
He remains stoic and unmoving.
“A zyanthan,” I add. That should get his attention, but it fails to move him. “I’m not lying, Warrior.”
There must be something in my voice that tells him I’m not lying—which I’m not—because he draws the gun as if he’s considering my offer.
He repositions the gun to the back of his pants. “I won’t arrest you. That’s what I’ll give you, Lexi.” He stresses the second syllable with a deep growl which grabs hold of my lady parts. I’m clenching my thighs. But this isn’t the time for flirting or getting aroused.
“Not good enough.” I’m fidgeting, but not because he’s piqued my interest. Time is running out. I don’t want anyone to get hurt.
I bite my lip. “Give me the gun before it’s too late.”
He shakes his head, resolute. Leave it to me to find the one squeaky clean cop in L.A. who won’t deal.
I mentally calculate how long I have before I’ll have blood on my hands. Literally and figuratively. A minute? No, less…
I can’t do it. I can’t let an innocent person get killed because I need a gun.
“Turn around!” I yell at the warrior as Moses lunges at him with a knife.
CHAPTERTHREE
LUTAN
The female’s yell has me turning and thrusting an arm up to block the male’s knife. Disarming him takes seconds, and with three solid punches, I knock him unconscious.
Cold and sudden, anger wells within me. Death doesn’t scare me, failure does. I turned my back on the threat without properly securing him. That’s how people die. Innocents. Like Narzan.
As beautiful and intriguing as the human female is, I never should have allowed her to distract me. I’d hoped this mission on Earth would help me find myself again, the male I used to be.
I turn around, expecting to find the female has fled. To my surprise, she’s standing there, eyes wide and her hands tightly wrapped around an iron rod she found in the alley.
“Are you planning to use that on me? All for a gun?”
She blinks twice then looks at the weapon in her hands and drops it, as if she didn’t know she was holding it. “Sorry.”
The females of this world have suffered like the females on other worlds the Coalition invaded. They lost their rights, their freedom, and any sense of safety they had. I understand why she picked up the rod. She has good instincts, and she saved me, which I will not forget. Especially when she could have let the male kill me, then taken the gun and run.
“You warned me. Why?”
Her chin lifts. “I want that gun, Warrior, but I won’t kill to get it.” Her eyes move to the unconscious male. “Is he dead?”
I bend down and feel for a pulse. “No.” Part of me wishes I had killed him, so he’d never hurt another person. Something he’ll do in time. It’s in his nature.
“I owe you, female. You saved my life. And made an enemy in the process. This male may hunt you down, eventually.” I remove the male’s belt and bind his hands behind him.
“Which is why I need that gun, Warrior. To protect myself. Against people like Moses and others who would threaten me or my family.”
“You’re mated?”
“Mated? Oh, you mean married. No. I’m referring to my parents and brothers. If you haven’t noticed, Earth’s not exactly a safe place. Money can buy a nice house and guards, but it doesn’t buy freedom.” With that, she braids her hair and tucks it up into the cap she scoops off the ground.
I reach up and remove the hat, the braids falling free. Despite my desire to touch the silky tips, I don’t. “You should not hide who you are.”
“That strategy may work for you. You have horns on display for everyone to see. People won’t be so quick to attack you. Women are targets here.” She yanks the cap from my hand and hides her hair.
