“What do you want, Lexi? More weapons? A blaster? I will gladly give you mine to ensure you’re safe.”

“I don’t want a damn blaster. I wantyou.”

CHAPTERSEVENTEEN

LEXI

Why the fuck can’t I walk away from Lutan? Every time he pushes me away, or says something downright invasive or annoying, my desire to be with him only increases. Worse, I want to tell him everything.

But I can’t. There are more people to consider than just myself.

I won’t lie to him. I’ve made up my mind about that. He deserves the truth, as much as I can give him.

My hands slide around his neck and I’d pull him in for a kiss, except he’s all muscle and impossible to move. No one’s going to make this male do anything he doesn’t want, including me.

Damn, I love a challenge.

He pushes off the bed. “You only think you want me, Lexi. It’s the nature of the bond between a sholani and her sholan. It’s difficult, but heartmates can resist, ignore the bond.”

“Ican ignore a magical bond that doesn’t exist. Can you?”

His horns curve back. Way back. Interesting.

“Do you have a guide to those things? Like a chart, so I can learn to interpret all the positions?”

He chuckles. “You tempt me, female, but nothing will happen between us.”

“A lot has already happened, Lutan. You arrested me because you wanted to keep me safe. You took our casual relationship to the next level and started calling the shots, as if you own me.”

“I don’t own you.”

“Damn right you don’t. No one does, including my family. Though they have a certain amount of influence over me. It’s the nature of life here. A single woman on her own has more risks and fewer opportunities. That’s why I live at home. It’s also why I work for my father.”

Lutan turns away from me, as if he’s hiding something.

I grab his horns and hold his face close to mine so he has no choice but to look me in the eye. “You, dear Warrior, don’t have a say in what I do.”

“I do as far as my investigation goes.”

He’s putting distance between us that sends a cold shiver through me. “I only intended to help. Not screw up your investigation,” I say softly as this need to soothe him overtakes me.

“Forget the drekking blasters. You were nearly killed!”

He’s more heated than I’ve seen him before, but his anger goes deeper. There’s hurt behind his eyes.

“Hey,” I whisper as I move my hand up and down his arm, caressing him. “I didn’t mean to upset you like this. I thought we were flirting.” I touch his cheeks and stare into his eyes. “I never meant to hurt you in any way. Or make you worry.”

“You didn’t hurt me.”

I scrutinize his expression and hear the hard swallow as his horns twist at the tops. “No, not me,” I conclude. “Someone else did.”

“It’s none of your concern,” he says, his tone once again harsh and dismissive.

When he side-steps me, I match him, step for step. “If we are heartmates, then whatever troubles you is my concern, isn’t it?”

“You said we are not heartmates,” he counters.

His words strike a sour note inside of me. “I don’t know what’s happening here, Lutan, only that you’re literally trying to run from me.”
