I ease the bundle from her, setting it on one of the potted trees. “You look gorgeous, Lexi. I only worry that you will intimidate the other females inside.”

Her smile returns. “You mean it? It’s been a while since I’ve been to anything fancy. Years. And several pounds. That’s why I didn’t have a dress of my own that fit. I’m a stress eater and my family… situation… creates a lot of stress at times.”

“Situation?”

“The family, um… business, can be demanding.” She waves a hand. “I don’t want to bore you.”

“You can tell me about your world, your family, anything you like. But we need to go inside, or the people of my embassy will think I’ve disobeyed an order. I’m required to be here tonight.”

She hooks her arm around mine and gives me a radiant smile that I could melt in if I’m not careful. “Ready when you are, Warrior.”

“You may call me Lutan.” Drekk, I’m offering her my first name as if she’s family or a close friend.

“Lou-tin?”

“Luuu-tan.” I emphasize the first syllable of my name. “It’s a traditional Zyanthan name that means steadfast.”

“My name meansman’s defender.” She hip-bumps me, which doesn’t deflate my pleasure cock. Not. In. The. Least. “Sort of what I did with you, huh, Lutan? I guess I’m living my destiny. Which I’m starting to think might be a lot more exciting than my role in the family business.”

“What is your role?”

The Brotherhood associates with og’dals, as well as other coalition members, but they are always made up of the local population. Discontents, or those who wish to gain power. Lexi doesn’t fit the profile, but still, I must investigate the possibility.

“Umm… sorry, I’m not allowed to talk about it.” She flashes a weak smile, then squeezes my arm. “Let’s go dance, okay?”

When she charges forward, she trips on the bottom of the dress that’s too long for her. I catch her, pleased at the chance to touch her. She hikes up the dress and loops her arm around mine once again. “Lead on, sweet knight.”

I wonder what a knight is as we cross the red carpet into the hotel. This evening will prove interesting, especially as I must determine if this beauty on my arm is an innocent or a criminal.

CHAPTERSIX

LUTAN

“What do you mean I need ID?” I ask of the two men in military dress uniforms standing inside the hotel entrance waiting for me to prove who I am.

“Protocols, ma’am.”

“Don’t ma’am me. I don’t have an ID. Most of the population doesn’t. This is absurd.”

“She is here at my request,” Lutan says. “I’m attached to the Zyanthan Embassy.”

“I guessed as much.” The corporal points at Lutan’s horns.

“Am I allowed entry?” Lutan asks calmly. I’m glad one of is us calm, but he can afford to be. He doesn’t have anything to hide.

The corporal picks up his datapad. “All personnel from the zyanthan and keentan embassies are welcome. I have to note your name.”

“Warrior Lutan Tannis.”

The soldier enters Lutan’s name, at which Lutan raises a brow. “This female is my assistant, which means she’s part of Zyan’s embassy.”

The soldier’s mouth thins. “You just said she was your guest and now you want me to believe she works for you?”

“Are you challenging my honor, human?” Long black horns rise slowly, ominously, sending a clear message to everyone watching.Don’t screw with a warrior.

A sergeant approaches and takes the datapad from the corporal. “We need to keep track of all attendees. Name, Miss?”

I hate to make a liar out of Lutan, especially if it affects his reputation, but he invited me here. If I’d known they’d need ID, I would have turned him down. Except it took me months to make the right connections and to find someone to vouch for me to Moses for that gun. Months of putting my life at risk down the drain because of one alien operative.
