“But I’m wearing layers of bulky men’s clothing. And I’m not exactly the slimmest of women beneath. I… I carry extra weight.”

“You carry extra clothing.” This female has a beauty to her that comes through every word, every action she takes. Surely whatever she hides beneath those clothes will match.

“You don’t get it,” she says with a shaky smile.

I chuckle. “No, female. It is you who doesn’t understand. I see beauty in you, regardless of the clothing you wear or your form beneath. Though I suspect for this ball we are expected to wear clothing that is less…”

“Grimy? Tattered? Clothing that doesn’t look like it crawled out of an alley?” Her smile blossoms like a circanni bloom in winter. A rare and beautiful wonder amidst the cold and darkness.

“Precisely,” I say, with a smile of my own, one I didn’t know existed in me.

“Don’t worry. I’ll dress appropriately for a Valentine’s Day ball. I just want to be clear, you’ll give me the gun after the ball?”

“If you fulfill our deal, yes. I will escort you. Where do you live?”

“Nope, I don’t give out my address to anyone. Safety. I’m sure you can understand.”

“I’m a zyanthan warrior. You will be safe with me.”

“I can’t, Warrior. It’s sort of a rule my family has. Don’t worry. I’ll make my way to the hotel.” She offers her hand. “We have to seal the deal.”

I extend my hand, clasp hers, and pull her to me, where I whisper in her ear, “I look forward to seeing what you hide beneath these layers, Lexi.”

Instead of pulling away from me, as I expect, she brushes her lips across mine. Soft, full, luscious. If she were the enemy, I’d surrender to her instantly.

Her mouth pulls away, leaving my lips tingling and my lower region rock hard. I’m off balance in a way I’ve never been around a female. So much, that I’m not sure if only my pleasure cock has hardened… or my mating cock, too.

CHAPTERFOUR

LEXI

“It’s very nice seeing you again, Vivienne,” my stepmother Melissa says as a pair of guards escort Viv into the dining room, where my entire family is finishing dinner. “It’s a shame you couldn’t join us earlier. We had Lexi’s favorite tonight. Lasagna.”

I roll my eyes so only Viv can see. Lasagna’s not my favorite. It’s my father’s, but my stepmom assumes everybody loves what he loves.

“Maybe next time, Mrs. Barrington,” says Viv, who’s standing there in a pair of jeans and gray hoodie with a backpack slung over her left shoulder

“Thank you for dinner,” I say as I rise. “It was delicious.” It never hurts to compliment Melissa in front of my dad. She may be a bit blind about what goes on around here, but she means well and she truly loves my dad.

My father clears his throat. “Sit down, Lexi. We’re not done. Vivienne, wait in the hallway, please.”

“Yes, Mr. Barrington.” Viv slips into the hallway without a sound. She’s easily intimidated by men who raise their voices, or in my father’s case, a man who doesn’t raise his voice but speaks with authority. Like a king.

Well, this is his kingdom.

“Was that necessary?” I ask.

“She knows her place. Do you?”

My brothers, who are seventeen and sixteen, start shoving each other for some unknown reason. My father ignores them, leaving them to Melissa to handle. He has bigger problems, namely me.

“I’m concerned about you,” my dad begins. “You’ve been sleeping in late and mouthing off at the guards.”

“Why do you care when I wake up as long as I get my work done? Which I do. And I’d hardly call telling McCauley to stay out of my room mouthing off. He has no business being in there.”

“He’s in charge of your security.”

Which is why I don’t want him in my room. If he shows up when I’m supposed to be there but I’m not, he’ll order a full search of the house and grounds and realize I’ve been sneaking out.
