“And you keep forgetting it’s our job to protect you.”

“And it’s my job to protect you!”

With her hands on her hips, fire in her eyes, and the way she stood there staring him down, he could only imagine how formidable she’d be once her wolf surfaced.Ifher wolf surfaced. Too much had already been taken from her. He would not control her like her father had.

“You’re right,” he conceded. “But don’t expect me to sit back while you take on guards. You take my lead.”

“We work together.”

“Damn, you’re stubborn.”

She stroked his arm, her fingers moving to his hip before curving over his ass. “That sounds like a statement, not a complaint.”

If he stayed in here much longer, with her looking at him like that, they’d end up in bed again. He’d given in to his wolf and his lust once already. It was time to show her what a white wolf could do. “Let’s go, my vixen. Time to find the rest of our pack.”

Chapter Fifteen

ALYSSA

Alyssa followed Maddox out of the building through a window in another room. There was no security on the window, no bars or alarms. Their escape seemed too easy.

“I don’t like this,” she whispered really low, knowing with his superior hearing he’d hear her.

“It’s the way I entered.”

“Where are the guards?”

“I knocked them out. Didn’t kill them, if that’s what you mean. We’re not killers like the WSSO claims, not unless we have to kill to defend ourselves.”

Without warning, he shifted. Smoothly, seamlessly. She’d seen him shift a few times before, but never so fast. Immediately, she surveyed the area, looking for what had prompted him to shift.

The smell of cologne or deodorant, she wasn’t sure which, struck her. Alyssa scanned the area, but couldn’t see much in the dark. That’s when she realized the camp had gone dark, really dark.

Maddox’s wolf leapt through the air, taking down two guards hidden in the shadows. The guards were wearing night goggles. Three additional guards descended on them. Alyssa kicked, connecting with a stomach, before someone grabbed her leg and slammed her against the ground, knocking the wind out of her. As the guard reached down to grab her, she kicked, sending him sailing into another guard.

Snarls and growls to her left told her Maddox’s position as she rolled toward a pair of night vision goggles laying on the ground. As she reached for the goggles, a guard stepped on her hand.

A pair of fine leather shoes appeared in front of her. “You don’t need those, sweetie.”

“Father—”

“We knew if we kept you long enough, that animal would find you through the blood-bond.” Her father motioned to the soldier to release her hand. This was a setup. They’d used her as bait to attract Maddox so they could kill him!

With an iron grip on her upper left arm, the guard hauled her to her feet. The muzzle of a gun rested against her head. “Stop, beast, or I’ll kill her,” the guard holding shouted at Maddox.

Maddox’s wolf howled but stopped fighting. Five guards, all of them bloody, finally pinned him to the ground.

Her father stepped forward, putting a hand on the soldier’s gun arm. “Enough, Murphy. Leave her to me. Go kill the beast.”

The second the gun lowered, she pulled the shiv from her pocket and thrust it up against her father’s neck. “Touch my mate and he’s dead,” she shouted to Murphy.

“You won’t hurt me,” Woodrow said. “I’m your father.”

“You just had a guard threaten to kill me.”

“A bluff.”

“Maybe he was bluffing, but I’m not. You threatened my mate, experimented on me, and killed my mother. I have every reason to kill you.”
