“And if Drake insists she swear an oath to him before then?”

“I know what I’m doing,” Maddox said, a slight growl underlying his words. “Let me have this one last time with her, to reconnect and say goodbye properly, and then she’ll be yours and Tiernan’s.”

If he thought this was the last time they’d be together, then she was going to have to straighten him out before theyreconnected. There was no way she was leaving him behind permanently.

“I’m not trying to get rid of you, Maddox,” Rafe said. “The opposite, in fact. But it makes me nervous leaving her here.”

“Do you trust that I’d give my life for her?”

“Yes.”

Maddox slid his hand to Alyssa’s lower back, sending a flare of heat through her as he finished speaking with Rafe. “Then focus on that. I won’t let Drake touch her.”

Rafe didn’t look the least bit pleased with Maddox’s assurances, but he didn’t challenge him either. He trusted Maddox, which was a huge step for the alpha.

Alyssa pushed up on her toes and kissed Rafe. “I’ll be fine. You can go on to Tiernan’s pack if you don’t want to wait here at the border.”

“Not moving from this spot, Artemis.”

She leaned past Rafe, to look at Tiernan, who’d settled at the base of a tree, looking rather lost. “Tiernan? Are you okay?”

“Never better,” he said, but she heard the fear in his voice.

“Let’s go, angel. I don’t want to be standing here when the guards from Tiernan’s pack come by.”

“I’ll be back,” she said to Rafe and Tiernan as Maddox took her hand and led her away.

They walked through the woods for two miles. “I didn’t realize guards lived so close to the border. I guess that makes for a short commute to work.”

“Some live closer to the main part of the pack. I was assigned here.”

“You don’t have much freedom here, do you?”

“No.”

“Then come with us.”

“Don’t you think I want to be with you?” he said as he backed her against the tree. The heat in his eyes began melting away her desire to argue with him. She had planned to use this time alone with him to convince him to run, to escape with her, Rafe and Tiernan. She had enough money set aside that they could hop on planes to Europe, out of Drake’s reach. They’d only have to lay low while she found someone who forged passports.

As his hand moved down her neck to the top of her jacket, she forgot every argument she’d been working on to convince him.

“I think you’re afraid,” she said instead, knowing Maddox feared nothing, but she needed to keep him talking, to learn what he was hiding from her.

Lips moved down her throat, leaving a tingling behind as he slid her jacket off and unbuttoned the top of her blouse.

“Afraid of what?” he said as her shirt fell to the ground next. She couldn’t believe he was undressing her out in the open, or that she was letting him. But that desire feeding into her over the bond made her too hot, too needy, to care who might walk by and see them.

Her bra fell off next.

“Afraid…” She inhaled sharply as his mouth latched onto a very stiff and sensitive peak. He sucked on her with a ravenousness that mirrored her own need for him. “Afraid of being blood-bonded again,” she pushed the words out as his hands curved over her lower back and slowly pushed her pants down

“Too late for that. I feel your every fear, your every need. Like now. You want to be fucked, and fucked hard.”

Damn it, he was right. This constant throbbing wouldn’t go away, and she knew it was because he was here with her. The wind blew, and she shivered from the cold.

“Fuck,” he said, then threw her over his shoulder and raced at an incredibly fast clip. Minutes later, he flung open the door to a small cabin, set her on her feet, and slammed the door behind her. He pinned her against the door without bothering to turn on any lights, even though the sun was setting.

“You’ll be warm now,” he said, not even winded.
