Alyssa headedto her house on the edge of the lake. A cabin, really, and it needed to be expanded with four people living there. Rafe already assigned a construction crew to add a second floor and materials had been ordered from the nearest town. She never thought she’d love living in the middle of the woods as much as she did, but she felt so content here.

Maddox had become the head guard of the Anderson pack, and he enjoyed teaching males who were eager to learn. Tiernan continued his scouting duties, which, for now, mostly included learning the territory. He was gone more than he was home, but he sure made up for his absence when he was here. Rafe and his father worked out their differences for the most part, in large thanks to Freya mediating. She understood both men and wasn’t shy about saying what was on her mind.

A hand slid around Alyssa’s waist from behind a moment before lips warmed her neck with a kiss. Those hands moved up her torso, taking her shirt with them. She didn’t have to ask or look behind her to know Maddox stood there. She’d know his touch anywhere, but she’d become acutely aware of scents after she’d had her first shift. Tiernan always smelled like tree bark and curiosity, whereas Rafe smelled like worry and rich earth.

“I finally figured out what you smell like,” she said as Maddox continued stripping her. “Spring water and hard work.”

“A shifter can’t smell like hard work. Or worry, though I admit Rafe worries more than most.”

“You don’t have to agree with me, but that’s how you guys smell to me.”

Maddox turned her around and his hard cock struck her stomach. “And you smell like honey and flowers. See? Physical objects.”

“If you can smell a person’s fear, then certainly I can smell how hard you work.”

“Only if I work up a sweat, angel,” he said as he bent her over the side of the sofa. “And I intend to work up a sweat.”

His timing was good, as usual. She needed a distraction.

“Wait. I do smell worry. Yours, angel. What’s wrong?”

“I was just thinking. You have your guards, Tiernan has scouting, and Rafe, well, he has the entire pack to keep him busy. If preparing shifters to go to the DSA falls through, I’ll have nothing. No purpose here. I won’t go back to a city just to keep my career. I want to stay here, but I want to be useful.”

“I’m changing my earlier statement. You worry more than Rafe. We’ve only been here a month. Give yourself time to acclimate,” Maddox said as his hands slid down her body. He proceeded to lick and kiss just about every spot on her.

Every place he touched came alive, especially when he added a growl. His growls always riled her wolf up, adding to the anticipation. Maddox knew exactly how to drive her crazy.

His head nudged her legs open wider and then she felt his tongue, so warm and wet, against her private area, slowly licking every part of her like she was a special dessert that he had no intention of leaving half eaten. Yes, this was exactly the distraction she needed.

His tongue found her clit at that moment and all words, all thought rushed out of her head. She didn’t hold back the moan. There was no need to here. Their house was miles from other shifters and the main part of camp.

“So sexy,” Maddox said before he began sucking on her clit. Her body felt as if it were lifting into the air as the orgasm struck. It was Maddox, lifting her legs, pinning her upper torso against the cushion, as he slid his cock into her pussy from behind.

Maddox took it slowly with her, allowing her to feel every inch of his length as well as his thumbs caressing her thighs where he held her up.

“I wish I could see your face,” she said.

“Close your eyes, angel, and see the bond instead.”

She did as he said. A dazzling display of hot reds and oranges danced before her mind’s eye. The colors struck her like a brilliant sunset, majestic, filled with wonder, and giving her hope all at once.

A hand stroked down her back and drew circles on her bare ass.

“That feels good,” she mumbled, her eyes still closed. But how are you doing that while holding me?”

“He’s not,” Rafe answered.

Her eyes sprang open, and Rafe hissed in air. “You don’t want me here?” he asked, sounding hurt.

“Of course, I do! I always want you. I always have, Alpha.”

“That’s not my title—” Rafe sighed. “Never mind.”

“Angel, it seems like you’re not the only one having trouble relaxing,” Maddox said.

“I’m fine,” Rafe said while continuing that delicious massage. “It’s just been a long day arguing with my father over our defenses. I’d rather focus on Artemis. Now, someone tell me what’s wrong.”

“Our mate thinks she’ll have no purpose here if the training program falls through.”
