Maddox closed his eyes, his thoughts turning to his conversation with Drake.

Of course, you should rescue your mate. It’s why I tapped my sources to find where the WSSO is holding her. She’s part of our pack now, or she will be when you return with her. And the other males are welcome too. As long as they pledge their loyalty to me.

The words were all wrong for Drake. It’s possible Hayden had convinced Drake to be more reasonable, but it didn’t feel right. Even though Hayden was working with Drake to help him stabilize the pack, Drake always had an ulterior motive. It was entirely possible the alpha simply wanted to increase the numbers of the pack. They’d lost a lot of females to the virus.

“Wake up, Maddox!” Tiernan shouted. “She’s gone!”

Maddox’s eyes sprang open. “Damn it!” The second Tiernan shifted, his wolf pounced on her trail and started running, with Rafe’s and Maddox’s wolves right behind him.

ALYSSA

You can’t escape them,Alyssa told her wolf. They’ll follow. They love me. They blood-bonded me.

Yes.

Where are you going? What do you want?

Her wolf didn’t answer, but Alyssa had a sinking feeling her wolf was planning something dangerous. There was no other reason to sneak away from the guys the way she had.

Alyssahad to figure out how to take control.

Her wolf suddenly broke into a sprint. Gunfire sounded nearby. Fuck, her wolf was heading toward the WSSO compound.

Chapter Twenty-Four

TIERNAN

Too close. Too damn close to the compound. Alyssa’s wolf was running straight for the compound.

Tiernan pushed his wolf, ignoring the pain in his shoulder. Even wounded, he had more speed than either Maddox or Rafe. The advantage of being lithe. If he kept up the brutal pace, he’d catch her.

Then what?

He’d pin her to the ground if he had to. But if she howled or did anything to draw attention that close to the camp, they’d find themselves surrounded by mercenaries in seconds.

Tiernan’s wolf dipped his nose to the ground once more, changing direction to the back end of the compound. Determination and rage crossed the bond, and he suspected what Alyssa was planning.

He found Alyssa’s wolf digging under the fence in an area covered by dense undergrowth and shifted to human form. “Alyssa.”

Her wolf kept digging.

“Babe, please listen to me. You’ll be in danger if you go back in. Revenge isn’t worth it.”

“Revenge?” Rafe said behind him.

“Her wolf wants revenge against her dad for being caged all those years,” Tiernan replied.

“I feel Alyssa,” Maddox added the moment he arrived and shifted. “She and her wolf are both scared, terrified, but her wolf is in control.”

Tiernan stepped closer until Alyssa’s wolf turned and growled at him. He knelt in front of her. “I know you can hear me, babe. We never prepared you for this, but we’re here for you, to protect you while you figure this out with your wolf. You need to take control, babe. That’s the one thing we can’t do for you.”

“Her fear is escalating,” Maddox said.

Tiernan could feel it as well. He had to reach her somehow, help her ignore her fear and assert herself against her wolf.

“Listen to me, babe. She’s your wolf and she’ll never hurt or betray you. You’re in charge, but you have to show her that. Don’t let her control you. This isn’t about shifting, either. You’ll figure that out in time. Just focus on taking control of your wolf. Pretend we’re back at the DSA training facility and she’s Graves or Kingsley. It’s a mind game with your wolf, babe. Show her you’re the strong woman we know you are.”
