“You were both lucky then. She could have gone feral, especially if she has a wolf in her.”

“She’s half-shifter. Maddox has proof.”

“Do you feel the wolf in her?”

Tiernan remained silent. The idea of spilling information so private seemed wrong, but it had been a long time since Liam had talked to him like a brother and not as his alpha. “There is no bond. If there was one, it’s gone.”

“Because she forced the bond. If you weren’t willing at the time, the bond would have been compromised.”

Damn, Liam was right. Why hadn’t he seen that? Because he hadn’t been thinking clearly. He’d been too eager to feel the bond, to know she was his.

“You could blood-bond her again, if you truly want her.”

“I want her, more than anything, but it’s too late. She blood-bonded Maddox.”

“Too late?” Liam scoffed. “That’s your problem, little brother. You give up too easily. You’re of the alpha line. Start thinking like an alpha, and you might just get what you want.”

Chapter Ten

ALYSSA

Alyssa woke to someone stroking her back. “That feels nice. Really nice,” she said, resisting the idea of opening her eyes and scaring off whoever was in bed behind her.

That hand moved to her lower back, teasing the top of her ass.

“Rafe.”

“How did you know?” he said, kissing the back of her neck.

“Because we’re in Tiernan’s pack, and I’ve noticed each of you gets rather intense and squirrely around your alphas. What you’re doing to me is not the action of a tense shifter.”

“Clever female.”

“That, and your hands are rougher than Tiernan’s.”

“Smart ass,” he said as he lightly smacked her behind.

“I thought your wolf was supposed to heal all injuries.”

“Rough hands aren’t an injury. It’s from running too hard without proper rest. It’s my wolf’s personal brand of payback.”

“They certainly have their own personalities,” she said as she turned to face him.

Green eyes stared at her as his finger ran along her arm to her wrist. “I think I hurt you, back at my pack.”

“You didn’t touch me. No one did.”

“That’s not what I mean, and you know it.”

“Your comment about never wanting to blood-bond me. I understood it.”

“That doesn’t make it hurt any less, though, does it?”

“The bond doesn’t mean much to me. But it means a lot to you. So, yeah, it hurts.”

He let his hand wander to a breast where his fingers drew light circles. “I have no pack now. I could blood-bond you.”

“I guess you could, except you shouldn’t.”
