“By doing what?”
“By mating a half-breed.”
“That was Liam? Your brother is the alpha?” Alyssa asked, stunned.
“Half-brother. Same father, different mothers.”
“Is that why he doesn’t like you? Because you’re competition for the position of alpha?”
“It doesn’t work like that, babe. He was already our father’s heir when I was born. And Liam has chosen his own heir. Not me. He doesn’t consider me alpha material.”
“That’s why you became a scout.”
“Partly. Being a scout gave me a chance to get away from pack life when it became too intense. Liam never really forgave me.”
“For what?”
“For being born a full shifter. Liam’s half-shifter, just like you.”
“Really? Can I talk to him? I have so many questions.”
Tiernan kissed her on the lips. “He doesn’t like being reminded that his mother was human. And I don’t think he’ll have any answers for you. He shifted in puberty, like the rest of us. You wouldn’t know he’s half-human from looking or talking to him.”
“I just thought—”
“I know. You want answers. We’ll help you find them, but first you need to rest. And I mean rest, Rafe,” he said, glaring at the alpha.
“I was only following her lead.”
“I do feel like I could use a few good nights’ sleep,” Alyssa said.
“I’ll see what I can do. I need to give Liam time to calm down before I can speak with him.”
“And then what?” she asked.
“We start looking for someone to forge passports,” Tiernan suggested.
Alyssa nodded, ignoring the growl within her. Her wolf was starting to make herself heard and felt. And right now, she seemed focused on something that didn’t involve fleeing to Europe. If only Alyssa could communicate with her…

“How dareyou bring her here, Tiernan!” Liam said, pacing across the living room of his house.”
“Your hatred of humans will doom this entire pack, Liam.”
“I don’t hate them. I just don’t trust them.”
“Your mother wouldn’t approve.”
Liam shoved Tiernan back until he struck the kitchen island. “Don’t talk about her. You know nothing about her.”
“I know she’s a trigger for you.”
“You want to push me, Tiernan? Want to bring out my wolf and see how fucking angry he is right now?”
“He has no reason to be angry. Just like you don’t.”
