“I’m worried, Tiernan, and not just about her being sick. If your pack fucking learns who she is…”
“I get it, Rafe, but I won’t be able to lie to my alpha if he asks.”
“You have to. Fuck, I know I’m asking you to do something I couldn’t do myself.”
“That’s not it. I’m not a good liar. Liam has always been able to see through my lies.”
“Then don’t lie,” Alyssa said, pushing her way into the conversation, though she wasn’t sure if they’d understood her as she stumbled over her words. Her tongue felt thick and disgusting, like she’d eaten three-day-old cotton candy topped with marshmallow cream. Her stomach rolled at the thought.
“Yes, Tiernan,” came a deep voice. “Don’t lie.”
Tiernan’s hand disappeared from her arm. “Damn, I hate when you sneak up on me.”
“Maybe if you were paying attention to your surroundings, as a scout should be doing at all times, then you would have heard me approaching.”
“This is my brother,” Tiernan introduced the tall, blond shifter with light eyes.
“You have a name?” Rafe asked.
“Greyson. Same as Tiernan’s.”
Alyssa could feel Rafe’s muscles tighten beneath her. As she tilted her neck to get a better view of Tiernan’s brother, she received what felt like a bite on the inside of her. Pain emanated everywhere. She winced.
“We had no intention of trespassing. Drake Novak gave us very little time to leave his land.”
“So, you thought Tiernan’s pack would be more welcoming?” Tiernan’s brother asked.
“We planned to stick to the border until we reach a road. Then our mate fell ill.”
“Our mate?” he said, turning from Rafe to Tiernan. “You’re sharing a female?”
“Yes.”
“Unconventional and unwise. I heard you went feral at the DSA training facility, Tiernan. I never thought you’d return here, let alone survive.”
“You’re overjoyed, I see,” Tiernan said.
“I’m pleased to see you alive. But returning with someone who’s infected… Tiernan, you had to know you’d be turned away.”
“Not a virus,” she slurred, trying to break through the fog in her head. “My wolf.”
With a raised brow, Tiernan’s brother approached and scented her. “You’re human.”
“Half,” Rafe and Tiernan said in unison.
“She’s biting me. Scratching. Tearing me up, like she’s trying to get out.”
“That’s why you’re sick. Your wolf has energy to burn off. You need to let her out, to run, before she fries you from the inside, female. Shift,” Tiernan’s brother ordered.
Alyssa lifted her chin and looked him right in the eye. “Brilliant deduction, Sherlock.”
“I’m not the one keeping his wolf locked inside, female.”
“Don’t you think I’d release her if I could?”
“With a mouth like that, you better learn to shift to defend yourself.”
“With arrogance like that, you better learn the world doesn’t revolve around assholes.”
