“Yes. They should be with their own kind.”
“Humans shouldn’t be with shifters,” Bruce agreed, the disdain clear on his face. “They’re little more than animals.”
Many of the men were nodding in agreement. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. These agents were supposed to be fighting the anti-shifters, not spreading their hatred.
“Right now, three of those so-called animals are hunting down the murderer. That’s right, I have three shifters backing me up.”
“Even if one of us was the murderer, those shifters aren’t trained in forensics,” Douglas pointed out with a haughty grin.
“True, but they know scent better than anyone. And they’ll scent Grave’s blood on the murderer’s knife or clothing. Somewhere in that dorm, there’s scent evidence that one of you never considered because you never looked at the shifters as anything more than hunters to help us destroy the anti-shifters. Well, tonight, they’re going to hunt. Right here.”
Douglas lost his smirk. Ike, Kevin, and Bruce got off the leg press and rowing machines, and Jason and Nash exchanged glances. One of the men was itching to get back to the dorm and hide evidence he never thought he’d have to worry about when he framed her.
“You’re bluffing,” Ike said.
“Bluffing?” She stepped aside. “Go ahead, Ike. Walk over to the dorm. See what the shifters are doing.”
“I’m going to get Gallagher, so he can arrest you,” Bruce said.
“Gallagher knows I’m innocent. He pulled me into that interrogation room to reveal my identity.”
“And why would he do that?”
“You’d have to ask him. In fact, pull out your phone and call him.”
Nash’s eyes looked to her hip, then her boot.
“Yes, I’m armed. But I’m not going to shoot. I want you to call Gallagher, get him over here.”
“You’re crazy,” Ike said, pushing past her to exit. Jason followed next. One by one, the men filed out. Ike could be the killer, except she doubted the killer would be stupid enough to be the first to leave.
Alyssa followed the men outside. Ike, Bruce, Douglas, and Kevin headed to the dorm. Nash and Jason headed to the admin building, where Gallagher’s office was.
“Well?” she asked, as Rafe and Tiernan appeared at her side. They had been standing in the shadows, out of sight.
“Kevin. He reeked of fear,” Rafe said.
“Follow him,” Alyssa said. “We can’t let him destroy whatever evidence he has.”
Tiernan nodded and headed toward the dorm.
“He’ll need help if the others team up, Rafe,” Alyssa said.
“I’m not leaving you.”
“Rafe, they all have guns. Please don’t let Tiernan go alone.” She drew her gun from her boot holster and held it flush against her side. “I’m armed and Maddox is nearby.”
Rafe eyed the gun. “There arenineshifters out there.”
“Have you scented any of them nearby?”
“No.”
“Then they’ve probably returned to their packs.”
Rafe scowled. “Get inside, where you’re harder to scent.”
“I’ll be in the admin building. I want to hear Nash and Jason’s conversation with Gallagher.”
