With Tiernan’s cock still inside her, he rolled them to their sides. Even as her eyes closed, Tiernan caressed her cheek and Rafe pressed his body against her back, making her feel warm and loved. Someone drew the blanket over them, and that’s how she found herself pressed between two shifters in bed, feeling as if nothing could break them apart.
Chapter Twenty
MADDOX
“It’s a good plan,” Alyssa said as Tiernan drove west down the two-lane highway toward the DSA compound. Not the direction they should be going. By now, the entire area around the government training facility could be swarming with law enforcement looking for her.
Maddox stared at the setting sun. He had nothing to say to anyone. Except perhaps Alyssa, but not here, not with Tiernan and Rafe up front able to hear everything he’d say.
“It’s too risky,” Tiernan objected as they passed a truck. “Thoughts, Rafe?”
“Still thinking. Don’t rush me.”
Rush. Fucking alpha heir. Rafe had rushed into bed with Alyssa last night. As had Tiernan, but at least he had blood-bonded her. Rafe shouldn’t have been in there with them.
Alyssa’s hand landed on Maddox’s arm. “Are you okay?” she asked, with a sheepish look on her face.
Guilt. His angel felt guilty. Not for taking the other two to her bed, but for not having him, too. He’d heard her say as much this morning when they were showering. Just her and Tiernan. Rafe had gone for a run to work off extra energy.
Maddox had taken his run last night, so he wouldn’t have to listen to the sound of the three of them together. Fuck, he couldn’t forget the moans he’d heard before leaving. He’d dreamt about being with her again. Sharing her, while unconventional, wasn’t what was keeping him from her, however. It was his damn past.
He captured her hand in his and rested it on his thigh. Touching her calmed him and his wolf. Fucking lucky Tiernan got to blood-bond her because of his damn wolf.
“I was afraid this would happen,” she whispered. Not that whispering kept the other two from hearing her, but it felt more private and it essentially told the shifters in the front seat to stay the fuck out of their conversation.
“I’m okay with it,” he said, straining to keep his voice even and unemotional.
“I thought perhaps last night. . . I mean. . .”
“You thought I’d come in? That I’d assume I was wanted?”
“You know I want you, very much. I haven’t made a secret of that, Maddox.”
No, she hadn’t. He squeezed her hand. “You’ll be fine with Rafe and Tiernan, angel. I’m not meant to be in a pack, even one with you as the reward.”
“I’m not a reward.” She stared at him, confronting him, challenging him. Daring him to stay with her and the others.
“You would be my reward. But I have a pack I need to return to,” he said as he returned his focus to the scenery outside. If he continued looking at her, at those beautiful hazel eyes that drew him in so easily, he might consider doing the unthinkable just to stay with her.
“What’s so fascinating out there?” she asked.
He could hear a waver in her voice. She was struggling, trying to pull him into conversation, pull him into a new pack with Tiernan, Rafe, and her. Very tempting, but not possible.
“Just watching the landscape, comparing it to home.” Trees, trees, and more trees. It reminded him of Colorado, except this wasn’t home. And this wasn’t his pack.Shewasn’t his.
“When are you leaving?” she asked with a hard swallow.
He scented salt in the air. She was crying.
“Come here, angel,” he said, pulling her into a hug.
“I don’t want to lose you,” she said, several tears rolling down her cheeks.
“You don’t need me, angel. You never have.”
“You’re wrong about that. I need you very much.”
“You’ll feel differently in time.”
