When his tongue glided over her lips, she opened for him, that need to submit to him, to have him dominate over her, returning. That wasn’t who she was. She refused to lose herself in him or any man. It was the reason she’d fought to be a part of this op.

Rafe peeled her shirt over her head. Without even bothering to remove her bra, he ran his tongue over her nipple, wetting the sheer fabric until her nipple hardened. Through the material, Rafe sucked her into his mouth, driving her crazy as his hand popped open her jeans.

His hand, large, strong and yet gentle, slid across her belly, going lower until he slid her panties to the side and cupped her mound. She arched her back, thrusting her breast toward him, wanting, needing more of him. Two thick fingers teased her folds, rubbing her clit until she ground against his hand.

More,” she squeaked out, breathless. “I want all of you.”

“No, you don’t, Artemis,” he said as he thrust those two fingers into her and curved the rest of his hand around her, holding her as if he controlled her. At that moment, he did. She couldn’t think straight. A small part of her was relieved that he’d turned her down, while the rest of her wanted him to fuck her so they could both stop pretending they weren’t meant for one another.

The orgasm struck fast and furious, making her entire body spasm. She clung to him, riding the wave as he slid his hand from her and wove it through her hair to hold her head steady as he captured her mouth again. As his tongue swept through her mouth, her heart raced faster, even as her body came down from the high.

“You are like a drug,” Rafe said, his voice deep and rougher than usual. “I can’t give you up.”

“Then don’t,” she whispered as she rested her head against his chest and took in his masculine scent, satisfying some inner, primal need to take a part of him with her. Already, she could see, feel, the effect these shifters were having on her.

He kissed her one last time, then handed her shirt to her. “Time to get back.”

“Where does this leave us?” she asked as she dressed.

“I don’t know.”

At least he was being honest with her. She could always count on Rafe to be honest, even if he was pig-headed and sexist at times.

“I have a lot to consider, Artemis.”

“You mean how to keep me off the next mission?”

“Quite the opposite. You’re smart and skilled.”

“You say that like it worries you.”

“It does. I can’t justify leaving you behind on the next op. I’m starting to understand the challenges of this training program go beyond keeping the other shifters in line. We have to learn to trust humans. Not just their skills, but their morals.”

“That shifter superiority complex of yours isn’t what you thought it was.”

“It’s. . . a disadvantage. It caused me to underestimate you, and in turn, the anti-shifters. We, shifters, can’t afford those types of mistakes.”

“Humans either, Rafe. We’re on the same side here. Maybe that’s your biggest problem. You keep forgetting we’re on the same side.”

He ran his hand through his hair. “You may be right.”

That took her back. Rafe wasn’t the type to admit to being wrong, but he had. With her.

“Thank you,” she said.

He grinned. A delicious grin she hadn’t seen before on him. “I’ll pleasure you anytime you want.”

She chuckled. “That’s good to know, but that’s not why I was thanking you.”

He raised a brow, waiting for her to explain.

“I think this is the first time you’ve been fully honest with me and admitted to not being perfect.”

“I never claimed I was perfect. Far from it.”

“But you never admitted to any weaknesses either.”

“That is not a wise move for a shifter and especially an alpha.”
