“Damn,” Alyssa said, as she bent down and removed her boot. “Got a stone in here.”
“Out. Now,” Hank said.
She fiddled with her boot, then reached in and petted Maddox one last time. And now Tiernan found himself jealous of Maddox all over again.
Rafe’s hand landed on his shoulder. “Easy, Tiernan.”
“That’s funny coming from you.”
“I was wrong,” he said, as Alyssa and the two humans left the room, the door clicking shut behind them.
“About me?”
“About her. She’s cool under pressure, and she’s playing them.”
“With no gun.”
“I know. I don’t like it either. But she did what she had to.”
“What are you talking about?”
Rafe moved over to Maddox’s wolf, whose eyes flew open. He shifted seconds later. “You don’t know how fucking hard that was not to shift and yell at that pervert to get away from her,” Maddox said as he stood up and tossed something to Rafe.
Rafe caught the object and held it up for Tiernan to see.
The keys to the cage.
“She picked his pocket and then slid them under Maddox’s head when she petted him that last time.”
“I didn’t even notice,” Tiernan said.
“Of course you didn’t. You were too focused on controlling your wolf. And for once your wolf was a help. He distracted the humans from seeing what she was doing. They were busy watching you the entire time.”
“Just get the damn door open,” Maddox said. “Analyze later. Artemis is still with them, and if I heard you correctly, she’s unarmed.”
The cell door clicked open without any trouble. Tiernan charged out, only to be pulled back by Rafe. “She was right. We need to work as a team. This is what we’re going to do. . .”

ALYSSA
Snake led Alyssa down a trail to a nearby lake. It didn’t take him long to start pawing at her.
“If we’re going to do this, let’s do it right,” she said as she pulled her shirt off and then bent down to remove her boots. “Start stripping, Snake. I’m not going to be out here freezing while you stay nice and warm.”
The moment he started stripping, she lifted her pant leg and removed her backup gun. She released the safety. The click caught his attention. “What the—”
“Hands behind your head. Lace your fingers and get on your knees.” He did as she said. “Cross your ankles,” she ordered as she walked around him. The moment she reached to pat him down, he punched backward with his hands, catching her in the chest. The force threw her backward, but she never dropped her gun even as she landed on her back.
Snake moved fast. She had to give him that. He kicked outward, knocking her gun from her hand, but that left him open. Alyssa swept his feet from under him, sending him crashing to the ground. As he pulled a knife from his boot, she slammed her foot on his wrist until he dropped the knife. A minute later, she flipped him onto his stomach and held his knife to his throat. “You even breathe too heavily and I’ll slice you open right here.”
“I’d listen to her if I were you,” Rafe said behind her.
“Fucking shifters!” Snake shouted.
Relief rolled through Alyssa, but not aimed at Snake. Hearing Rafe’s voice, knowing he was safe, was all that truly mattered to her in that moment.
“Keep cursing at him, Snake. I’m sure that will make him all warm and fuzzy toward you.” As Alyssa rose, Rafe slammed a foot down on the center of Snake’s back to keep him down. He was a lot larger than Snake, and with his shifter strength, there was no risk of Snake escaping.
