“What happened?” Melina asked.

Reece pointed to his hair and then to his blue shirt.

“I don’t understand,” she said.

Jayce, wearing only a towel around his hips, burst through her door. His hair was bright blue.

Melina covered her mouth to stifle her laugh. “You died your hair.”

“No, I didn’t fucking dye my hair. Someone put something in the showerhead.” He shoved his hand forward with blue powder.

She recognized the substance. It was easy enough to create by combining cobalt and trace amounts of serilium. Cobalt infused soil was often found in greenhouses that grew orllis to repel certain wildlife. Reece could easily have pulled this prank, though he wasn’t one to prank anyone. Zev was.

“You did this,” Jayce accused Reece who held up his hands and shook his head, claiming innocence.

“Maybe this is a parting gift from Zev,” Melina said, her laughter escaping her.

“This isn’t funny, Lina.”

“It’s a beautiful shade of blue. Does that help?”

“No. Do you know how much I’ll stand out now? No one will take me seriously.”

“Relax, Jayce. If they want to deal, they’ll deal, regardless of hair color,” Ivan said.

Jayce scowled, an expression he wore too much of late.

“I think it’s sexy,” Melina added, trying to reduce the rising tension in the room. “It sets off your eyes.”

Jayce arched a brow, calmer now. “Sexy enough to entice you into my bed?”

“Is that all you think about?” she asked.

“Yes,” said Jayce and Ivan in unison, followed by a grunt by Reece.

She shook her head while looking at the trio. “How about a simple kiss for now? Then tomorrow, I’ll get the blue out of your hair for you.”

“You can do that?” he asked, cautiously hopeful.

“Hello? Medical doctor with a second degree in pharmaceuticals here. Do you think Ican’tget a little blue dye out of your hair?”

Jayce threw his shoulders back as if his character had been called into question. “I never doubted your talents.”

“Now he’s just kissing up to you since he knows you can do it and he didn’t think of that himself in the first place.”

“It’s a date. You and me tomorrow, Lina.” Jayce sauntered out like he’d scored big. Come to think of it, he had. She now had another date with him, and every time they had a formal date, things got a little wild.

“Okay, tell me the truth, Reece. Did you do it?” she asked.

Reece’s eyes immediately jumped to Ivan.

“Way to keep my secret,” Ivan said.

“Why would you do that to Jayce?” she asked, surprised. Jayce was already stressed out and not sleeping well.

“He needs to unwind a bit. This isn’t the real Jayce you’re seeing, but I’m not sure what has him wound so tight.”

Reece signed the letter M.
