“I should be treating your back right now,” she said, her voice deepening, gaining a sexy, sultry quality.

Fuck his back, he’d put up with the burning and itching for a lifetime if it meant a few minutes of her touching him. Her hand feathered over his abdomen, going lower. If she continued lower, she’d discover how rock hard he was for her. Maybe that would be a good thing. He wouldn’t need words to let her know he wanted her.

“Ow!” she screamed.

Reece’s eyes flew open. Collins had grabbed her from between Reece’s legs. The bastard threw her against a wall and wrapped his hand around her throat so tight he was cutting off her air. She clawed at him, but he punched her in the face, twice. She slumped to the floor.

Collins shut the isolation doors, tinted the color to black, so no one would see anything from the hallway.

Unintelligible sounds ripped from Reece’s throat. He was fucking chained to the table still! Reece pulled on the chain as hard as he could while continuing to shout.

Collins, who was several feet beyond his reach, unbuckled his pants and stood over Melina as she started to stir. Reece couldn’t form words, but he could make a racket, attract the guards.

“Shut the fuck up and I’ll give you a turn with her,” Collins said as he pulled her pants down.

She roused enough to kick at Collins. He struck her again until she went still.

Reece flung the datapad at Collins, striking him in the head. The med-tech turned and grabbed a chair. “You piece of shit,” Collins swore as he swung the chair at Reece’s head.

Reece grabbed the chair and jerked it. The force pulled Collins toward him. The asshole didn’t know who he was dealing with, or that Reece had one free arm. Collins’ eyes widened when Reece reached out and grabbed his shirt, pulling him in until his arm wrapped around the med-tech’s throat. In seconds, he snapped the man’s neck and let the body drop to the floor.

Again, Reece strained against the cuffs. He couldn’t reach Melina, couldn’t do a damn thing to help her. “Een,” he said, the closest he could come to saying her name.

Coughing, Melina pulled herself into a sitting position. Tears streamed down her face as she pulled her pants up and scurried backward, away from him, away from Collins. Her wide eyes and shaking form angered Reece.

Reece held both palms up to show she didn’t need to be afraid. Fucking voice. . . of all the times not to be able to talk!

“Wh-where is h-he?” she asked.

Reece sliced a single finger across his throat.

“D-dead?”

He nodded.

Still shaking, she pulled herself off the floor. Reece inhaled, able to see the damage Collins had done. She had a split lip, bruised cheek and one eye was swelling shut. The bastard didn’t have to hurt her like that. He was twice her size.

Cautiously, she dragged her feet closer to Reece and startled when he moved.

Fucking Collins. Now Melina was scared of Reece. Reece put his right hand back into the cuff and locked it with his left.

“You d-didn’t have to do that,” she said, still keeping her distance.

Yeah, he did. He wouldn’t have her fear him. Or did she mean he didn’t have to kill Collins, which he most definitely had to do. No one would touch her. Only him.

Slowly, she rounded the bed to see Collins slumped on the floor, his head hanging at an odd angle.

She covered her mouth with her hand for a brief moment before saying, “You k-killed him.”

He nodded again.

Her eyes snapped to the closed doors. “They’ll punish you if they find out, won’t they?”

They would, but he was already a Level 5, condemned to Veenith. There was nothing else they could do to him here. Except maybe take him off the hunting detail and stick him in the mines. That might not be so bad. At least it was warm down in the mines, unlike hunting during the winter months.

“I can’t believe you did that for me.”

He’d do a lot more for her. He wished he could tell her that. Maybe he should finally accept Zev’s offer to teach him to read.
