“What of your expectations?” she asked.
He released a deep breath. “I expect I’m going to fall flat on my face if I don’t get off my leg soon.”
She’d forgotten about his leg. He was leaning heavily against the chair. He hadn’t been joking. She hurried under his left arm, to support him as they headed down the hall to his bedroom.
When they reached his bedroom, he practically fell into the bed, wincing as he did so. She helped lift his leg, and he collapsed back onto the pillow. He looked beyond tired. It hadn’t even been a full day since they’d been pulled from the mine. He had to be exhausted.
“Want me to undress you?” she asked.
“That’s one question you never have to ask. I give you permission to undress me any time, any place,” he said with a grin. Just like that, the big flirt chased away all the tension that had been weighing her down.
He closed his eyes. “Thank you, Alli.”
“For what?”
“Trusting me.” He drifted off to sleep. She pulled off his boots and covered him with a blanket. She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek, he’d given her a lot to think about, but she knew one thing. She trusted Kayo, and that was the headiest feeling she’d ever had.
