Dresden’s right hand fingered the blaster at his side. The crowd stepped back further away from Vaughn. Sersie stepped back as well, pulling Hannah with him.
“No,” Hannah cried. “Don’t let him kill Vaughn,” she begged Sersie, unable to contain her tears as terror swept through her.
“There’s nothing we can do,” Sersie said, choking up. He tightened his grip on Hannah.
On the dais, Dresden shook his head, as if he were sorry, but his grin, that arrogant grin of his said otherwise. “You knew what was expected of you with the trials,” he said loud and clear, for everyone to hear. Narkos’ Manager would make an example of Vaughn that none would forget. “You thought you could deceive me, keep me from getting what I wanted. Well, doctor, you crossed the wrong man.”
Everything seemed to happen at once. A guard slammed the end of his blaster into Vaughn’s middle, causing him to double over. A second guard pushed Vaughn face down into the dirt and dug his knee into the middle of his back, while a third slapped cuffs onto his hands and ankles.
Sersie suddenly let go of Hannah. She swung around to see two guards pulling Sersie back, forcing him to the ground as well.
Then an arm snaked around her waist from behind and lifted her off the ground, carrying her away from Vaughn and Sersie. Hannah punched and clawed at the guard as he carried her away from the men.
“No!” Vaughn yelled somewhere behind her as the guard carried her through the crowd toward Dresden.
“I warned you, doctor,” Dresden said as two guards grabbed Hannah by her arms and dragged her up the four steps. Dresden’s hard eyes locked with hers before he faced the crowd once more.
“Unit 475 is officially disbanded. Their greatest asset will now revert to its previous owner.”
Dresden’s hand locked around her neck. “Griggs, come claim your property.”
