“Let’s step back a minute. Forget about Narkos, Foley, children, and everything else. What did you do for fun back home?”

Fun back home? She spent most of her money trying to get medicine for her sister. And her free time? That went to tracking her sister down all over the city.

Vaughn trapped her hands in his. “You’re wringing your hands again.”

“Because I need to tell you something. The others too. About having kids.”

“If you’re unable to have children, it won’t change how I feel about you.”

She took a deep breath. “I can have children, at least I think I can.”

“Then what are you trying so hard not to tell me? That you don’t want children because of where we are? Foley said women and children, the entire unit in fact, can return to Argus when the oldest child reaches school age.”

The buildings in the distance caught her attention or gave her a reason to avoid meeting Vaughn’s eyes. They’d walked far enough to see the top of the research center, which was a three-story building, the largest building in the colony. The med-center only had one level.

“Hannah?”

She had to tell him. He deserved the truth.

“I think under Foley’s management, the Level 4s will have a chance to go home,” Hannah began. “The women with kids even earlier.”

“Hannah. . .” Vaughn paled. He grabbed the back of her neck, forcing her to look at him. “Don’t say it.”

“Vaughn, I’m level 5. I’m never leaving Narkos.”
