“Going to sleep,” he said as he spooned her from behind, as if laying down with her was the most natural thing in the world. He never asked if she wanted to share body heat or anything like that. Maybe he thought she was easy. No, he’d backed off when her nerves had gotten the best of her earlier. Things had gotten too intense too fast for her, and he’d sensed it.

He slid one arm under her head, and the other draped over her ribs. His large hand splayed across her stomach, shocking her at how intimate a touch it was. Never in a million years would she have let anyone else slide in next to her and take such liberties, but Callen. . . She had a weakness for him.

Kate forced herself to relax and enjoy the moment, to feel safe and protected for once.

“I bet you’re missing the sofa in that print shop right about now.”

“Nah, this is nicer.”

“What about cold, hard cement is nicer?”

“I get to hold you,” he said, in that dreamy falling-asleep voice she really loved.

She couldn’t argue his logic, not as he pulled her snug against him. Warmth, sweet warmth surrounded her. Having Callen wrapped around her was even better than having an electric blanket. There were some benefits to being together, apparently. If only he knew how big a step this was for her. No one had ever slept next to her, except Janie, when Kate cried at night, missing her parents. Janie would come into her bed and hold her until she drifted off to sleep.

Not only did Callen feel really good in all the right places, he smelled like she imagined home would smell like, if she had one. Who’d ever think she’d have a slice of heaven in a beat up old storage unit? It was a shame it would only last until morning, when she had no choice but to leave him behind.
