It would do no good to object to the risky location, or so she convinced herself. The real problem was pulling away from Blade. Moving her hips, sliding on and off his glorious length while the wind tossed her hair, made her wish this time with Blade would never end.
His hands played with her breasts through her dress, making her wish he’d take the damn thing off. She considered reaching back for the zipper, but then she’d lose the rhythm. With that looks of peace suffusing his face and body, she didn’t dare move.
A tension deep inside of her rose, demanding she ride him faster. The wave of pleasure struck hard, making her stop and ride out the waves as her pussy gripped him. His cock pulsed within her even as she fell forward into his arms.
The orgasm hadn’t been earth-shattering, but it had been sweet and perfect because it had been with Blade.
His lips nuzzled her ear. “Yeehaw,” he whispered.
She burst out laughing, burrowing her head against his shoulder. “I can’t believe we just did that out here, on the steps where Frank and Callen could come by.”
“And I’m still inside you, Angel.”
She jumped off of him, feeling the loss immediately. She smoothed her dress down, her eyes quickly darting into the darkness of the woods.
“I really need to learn when to keep my mouth shut,” Blade grumbled as he zipped up his jeans.
The sound of a branch breaking made her jump and turn.
“It’s nothing,” Blade said, rising. “Just a deer.”
“You can see it? Sorry, stupid question.”
“Actually, I can’t see it, not with all those trees blocking my line of vision. But I can smell it.” His hand sifted through her hair. “You’re tense again.”
She was. It didn’t take much out here, in the dark. “Something about this area at night reminds me of when you rescued me from Drake. I keep expecting one of his patrols to attack.”
Blade’s arms curved around her waist as he drew her back against his chest. And just like that, she felt safe again. She couldn’t leave Blade. She needed him in so many ways. She could have a wonderful life with him if she didn’t let herself get caught up in the past.
“Want to hear the rest of the story?” Blade asked.
“Story?” she asked, as he pulled her from her thoughts.
He stood there, still holding her as he leaned his head against hers. “About how I met Callen.”
“Sure.” She could use a distraction. Thinking too hard only stressed her, and she wasn’t ready to put Blade behind her, even if she wasn’t quite ready to say yes to a life with him.
“I came across Callen on one of my honey raids. I hadn’t seen another wolf shifter in nearly two years. I didn’t know him, didn’t want to know him, but I had been alone for too long. He wasn’t talking much, couldn’t really, considering his condition, but it didn’t matter. For the first time in two years, I wasn’t alone. I certainly wasn’t going to leave him for the bears to finish off. Even if he died before we made it out of bear shifter territory, I was determined he’d at least die in the arms of an ally, not the enemy.”
“You didn’t fail your pack,” she said, her voice soft.
He chuckled, sounding at ease with the world. “Knowing and believing are two different things, aren’t they?”
They were talking about Kurt now. Blade was damn sneaky, but he was right. “I keep going through everything I could have done differently, all the paths I could have taken that would have resulted in Kurt still being alive today.”
“Yeah, me too. Not so much anymore, but for a long time, that’s all I did.”
She released a deep breath and turned in his arms. “I’m glad you were able to accept his offer and make a home for yourself with his pack.”
This time he laughed. “You think I said ‘yes’ because Damien offered me a place? Hell, no.” His smile fell away. “Fear, Angel. It’s powerful, and it kept me from saying ‘yes.’ I didn’t want the responsibility of caring for another pack, for shifters that I’d end up caring for only to—”
“To have them ripped from you, leaving you alone again,” she finished for him.
“Yes.”
“I’m afraid, Blade. If I love you, then I’ll lose you too.”
His warm lips pressed against her forehead. “It takes time to let go of the past. Just promise me you won’t hide from the world.”
