Danny gasped as hegot out the front door, Gage unconscious in a fireman’s carry over his shoulders.Just as the fire truck screeched to a stop, Danny’s legs gave out and he sank to the grass, rolling Gage onto his back.Sucking in deep breaths of air, he barely registered the firefighter kneeling beside him.
“Sir, was there anyone else inside?”
“N...no...”Danny coughed managing to get to his knees.
“He’s not breathing.”A police officer said.
Danny’s fuzzy brain cleared at those words.He crawled on his knees over to Gage and grabbed the front of Gage’s singed shirt tearing it open.Instinct now taking over, as he started the chest compressions while the police officer got ready for mouth-to-mouth.“Damn it.Come on Gage.Breath.”
For nearly two minutes, Danny and the officer worked in tandem, as the firefighters tackled the fire behind him.When Gage took a huge gasp of air and started coughing, Danny let out a relieved sigh.He rolled Gage onto his side and gently rubbed his friend’s back.Gage opened his eyes and slowly lifted his head, his eyes locked with Danny’s.Danny took in the smoke-covered face of his friend and teammate.
“Slow breaths Gage.The paramedics are nearly here.”Danny instructed.
“What...what happened?”Gage asked, his voice ragged from the smoke.
“Not now.Let us just get you to the hospital.”Danny said, waving over the medics.“Does anything hurt?Feel broken?”
“I hurt everywhere.Don’t think anything is broken though.”Gage stated.
“Sir, can you tell me your name?”the medic asked, kneeing next to Gage.
As the medics took over, Danny stood and stepped back.Pulling out his phone, he called Ethan.“Ethan, we got a big problem.”

Stacey sat at Gage’sbedside, holding his hand.The room was silent except for the regular beeping of his heart monitor.She, Alora, and Krista had just finished their dinner and were looking over their dessert menus when Ethan and Lance walked up.From the look on both men’s faces, Stacey had felt her heart skip.It took everything in her not to panic right there in the restaurant.Once outside, Ethan told her what happened.Stacey demanded to be taken to him right away.Ethan had stayed with her until Gage had been brought back from the tests the doctors were running.After he was moved to a private room, Stacey informed the doctor and nurses that she was not leaving and if they had a problem with that, they could all kiss her ass.A cot was then brought in for her.It was only then did Ethan leave, telling her to call him if anything changed.She promised she would.
“Oh Gage.”She sighed, kissing his knuckles.“Please baby, open your eyes for me.”
Gage’s hand tightened slightly around hers before his eyes opened slowly.He let out a low moan before his head turned and his eyes focused on Stacey.“S...Stacey?What happened?Where am I?”
“Shh.It’s all right now.You are at St.David’s.As to what happened, what do you remember?”she asked gently.
Gage frowned as he tried to recall the day.For several moments nothing came to mind.Then like a lightning bolt, the memories came flooding back.“Danny!”
