“Oh, he is Ma. He’s so sweet and he’s read my books. He says his Ma is a huge fan and she got him to read my stuff. Cord says he’s read my suspense stuff but not my pure romance stuff.” Moira nodded.
“You sound like you’re in love.” Laura laughed.
“I am Laura. Cord said he loved me first.” Moira replied.
“Moira, but you two only knew each other what, three weeks?” Kiernan argued.
Moira sighed, “Da, I know it’s only been a short time, but I know what I’m feeling. Cord and I just fit. I know he lives in New York and I’m here, but we can figure it out. In fact, next month his ma is coming out for a visit. His da is working on an anniversary surprise and is using this visit to do it. Cord wants me to come up to meet her. He also said to bring you and Ma as well. Hell, even Sean and Laura if they could but he understands if you can’t because you live in Norfolk.”
Silence fell over the table. Moira could see that Laura and Maureen were happy for her and fully supportive. Sean and Kiernan however looked to be having doubts. Moira could see where they would be having them. Yet, she also knew her own heart and mind. She loved Cord and knew he loved her. Moira looked from her brother and father waiting for one of them to speak up. It was Sean.
“Moira, you’re my deirfiúr bheag and you always will be. But, if you’re sure about how you feel toward this O’Brien guy then I’m happy for you.” Sean sighed.
“I’m completely sure Sean. Just wait, once you meet him, you’ll see for yourself.” Moira smiled.
Kiernan let out a low breath, “Well, I suppose yer Ma and I could go with you to meet his Ma. Just let me know the dates and I’ll see what I can do.”
Moira hopped up from her chair and hurried over to her Da and hugged him, “Oh thank you Da.”
Cord
Cord waited for his mom or dad to answer. Ten minutes ago, Moira had texted him telling him how her family had taken the news. She also said her mom and dad would be coming out to New York to meet his mom. Now, Cord was the one feeling nervous about telling his parents about Moira. He took a few slow breaths when his mother answered the phone.“Hello?”
“Hey mom.”
“Oh Cord, you’re home. How was your trip? I hope you actually relaxed.”Sally O’Brien teased.
“I did mom. In fact, well, is dad there?” Cord asked.
“He’s right here. Do you want me to put this on speaker phone?”Sally questioned.
“Yeah, that would be easier since I have something to tell you both.”
There was silence for a few moments before Cord heard his dad,“Hello Cord.”Peter O’Brien greeted.
“Hi pop. Well, while I was in St. Lucia, I met someone.” Cord began.
For the next few minutes, Cord told his parents about his time with Moira. He told them how they met and how much fun they had together. As expected, when he revealed who Moira was, his mom was beyond excited. That took a few moments to calm her so Cord could continue and caused Peter to just laugh at his wife’s antics. When he dropped the bombshell that he and Moira were in love, there was nothing but silence from his parents.
“Mom? Dad? You still there?” Cord asked.
“We’re here. Cord, are you sure? I mean, you’ve never even shown any interest in being a one-woman man.”Sally replied.
“Jeez mom, you make me sound like a gigolo.” Cord groaned.
“That’s not what your mom is saying.”Peter chuckled,“But you have to admit, it seems a bit out of the blue for you. You used to say you weren’t ready to settle down.”
Cord sighed, “I know but then…hell, I don’t know. When I met Moira and we started spending time together, it just felt so right. I know we haven’t known each other long, but I know I love her, and she loves me. I even asked her to come to New York next month to meet mom and to bring her folks if they can.”
“Oh, I’d love that. And not just because I’m a fan. I want to meet the woman who has won your heart.”Sally gushed.
“Cord, you’ve always used sound judgment and you’re not one to just jump in blind. If you say you love her then of course I will support, you. Since I can’t come out with your mother, I’ll just have to find time soon to go out myself and meet her.”Peter said.
“I promise, once you meet her, you two will love her. Oh, I need to say that Collen knew. I told him first and I swore him to secrecy. He had called and I was bursting to tell someone, and he just happened to be that person. I wanted to be the one to tell you and he wasn’t happy about keeping this from you guys.” Cord stated.
“Then we won’t be mad at Collen. At least you didn’t wait too long to tell us.”Sally teased.
Cord and his parents talked a little longer before he hung up. After that call, he texted Moira to let her know how things went. She sent him a laughing face emoji when he told her about his mom practically squealing when he told her that he was now dating her favorite author. Cord also told her that his mom was looking forward to meeting her and her parents. When Cord and Moira finally said goodnight, he felt relieved. Soon the woman he loved would meet his family and he would meet hers. He couldn’t wait.
