“I didn’t think you cared.”
Smiling, I admitted, “For what it’s worth, I didn’t want to care. In fact, it’s been a pain in my ass…”
Her laughter cut me off.
“And for what it’s worth,” she replied. “I’ve tried so hard to forget you too.”
“So, what you’re saying is we’re both failures,” I teased. “I can live with that.”
Sophie’s laughter died down and I could tell she was getting more serious.
“But why move in with you? Isn’t that moving too fast?”
“Baby, we can’t move fast enough for me. Once I’ve made up my mind, there’s no going back and you’re mine. I want you in my home… in my bed…”
“You do realize that after the shop sells, I’ll be an unemployed mooch, right?”
“First, I plan on keeping you so busy in my bed that you wouldn’t have had time to keep working anyway. But more important…” I pause, worried I was about to betray my promise to Matt. Then I remembered, like her father and brother before her, she was a Locke.
“But more important, you’re still the best damn safecracker I know. You’ve got the perfect skills to be part of the Knight family business.”
“Ah, I see. You’re only interested in my felon skills,” she teased.
“Far from it, although I plan on testing those skills when I handcuff you to the bed. We’ll have to see how long it takes you to break free,” I joked.
“You assume I’ll want to actually break free.”
Her grin was like sunshine. It reminded me a lot of Matt’s smile. How lucky I was to have it live on in my life through Sophie. I may have made him a promise to keep her safe, but I planned on doing much more than that. I was making it my life’s mission to make her happy.
We each started putting our clothing back on, but it didn’t take long to realize the last thing I wanted to do was get dressed and go out in public. This relationship thing was too new. I didn’t want to share her… not yet.
“So how set are you on going to Waterfall tonight?” I ask, prepared to go if she really wanted to.
“Thankfully, there is one more event next month. I’d rather we take Margaret’s picnic back to my townhouse. We can throw out a blanket and eat on the rooftop deck. That way we can still enjoy the night, but with a bit more privacy, if you get my drift.”
She was speaking my language.
Just before we stepped outside for the short walk to her house, I pulled her in for one more promise.
“I didn’t check what Margaret sent, but I’m calling dibs right now. That pussy of yours is the only dessert I want after dinner.”
“Promises, promises.”
EPILOGUE
NathanfromKnight Takes Bishop
“Come in,” I shouted in the direction of my closed office door.
As expected, my right-hand man and bodyguard, Alexi, stuck his head in the small crack he’d made when opening the door.
“The private investigator dropped off that package you’ve been waiting for.”
I waved him to come in, not trusting myself to say any words in the moment for fear he’d pick up on my uncharacteristic glee. Reaching out, I took the heavy expanding file case from his hand and placed it in front of me.
“Thanks,” was all I got out before he retreated behind the once again closed door.
The faux leather case was bursting with information. The string clasp on top was stretched in the attempt to hold in the secrets inside.
