“That decathlon tournament was a bust, right?” I take a sip of my water when my throat becomes unbearably dry.
“Embarrassing,” William agrees, leveling me with a half-teasing, half-annoyed look. “Did you not study the night before?”
I gag on the water.
“I mean, I did…”
“It’s okay.” He smiles once more. “I’ll study with you next time, if you want.”
Struggling to refill my lungs with air, I drop the water glass and slowly unroll the silverware just so I have something to do with my hands.
“I didn’t know you were so good with facts,” I admit, watching him through my fringe of lashes. “You must have a really good memory.”
“It’s all about who you know,” William replies vaguely, but his attention has already dropped…to my lips. Is…?
Is William Washington thinking about kissing me?
Desire heats his eyes as he places his elbows on the table, leaning forward.
My eyes flicker down to his lips as memories of my kissing training rush to me. The stubble on Van’s chin…
Akor’s punishing grip on my waist…
Zolroth’s—
“Katty!”
I jump a foot in the air at the sound of my brother’s voice, instantly pulling away from a disappointed William. I glance over my shoulder just in time to see Adam barreling towards me, arms already extended.
“Adam,” I gasp in alarm, “what are you doing here?”
“We’re having a loser dinner!” Adam exclaims eagerly. “Razzy said that since the team sucked so bad, we have to have one.” I stare over his shoulder where the man himself strides in with the rest of the decathlon team. Zolroth, Van, Akor, and Kastros stand at the back of the makeshift group, spewing acid at William with their eyes.
“Excuse me, waitress!” Raz waves his hand to capture the brunette’s attention, and her eyes light up when she catches sight of him.
“Yes,” she practically purrs, all but running towards him.
Raz nods towards the large round table directly beside us, easily able to fit the entire group.
“Do you mind if we sit here?” He flashes her a radiant smile, one that doesn’t reach his eyes, as she glances towards the entryway currently teeming with waiting customers.
“Do you have a reservation?” she asks softly, still batting those abnormally long lashes at him.
He leans forward until his mouth is directly beside her ear, speaking too low for me to hear. Jealousy unfurls in my gut like a poisonous flower as she giggles, nodding once.
“Of course. Give me a second to grab you guys silverware and menus.” She sashays away, a ridiculous sway to her hips, but Raz is already focused on me and William.
“I didn’t expect to see you guys here!” he says with a wide smile. Awaytoo wide smile. He sort of looks like a fucked up clown, but without the makeup, wig, or clown outfit. So, a sexy clown. A sexy, devilish clown.
“Yeah.” William reaches across the table to place his hand on mine, and Raz’s eyes smolder. “We’re on a date.”
“A date?” Adam murmurs, backing away from me with a frown firmly in place. He glances between me and William before shifting his gaze to the demons. “I don’t want you to date him. I want you to datethem.”
“Who’s…this?” William asks in distaste as his eyes rove over Adam and dismiss him. Irritation slices through me before I can tamp it down. He’s probably annoyed that our date got interrupted, not that I blame him. Besides, he doesn’t know yet that Adam is my little brother.
“Adam,” I introduce, nudging my little brother forward. “He’s my kid brother.”
“You brought your brother with you?” he asks in obvious disbelief.
