CHAPTER 14

BROOKS

I shield my eyes from the sun, squinting at the car kicking up dust as it comes down the driveway. It isn’t a car I recognize, and we rarely have visitors from out of town. When they park in front of the large brick farmhouse, my heart skips a beat at the auburn hair shining in the light as Kinsey climbs out of the red car.

Pulling on the reins, I guide the horse to the fence and whistle to get their attention. Kinsey smiles and walks over.

“You look good like that,” she yells over the whipping wind.

I smirk. “Sweaty and half a day’s worth of grime settled on me?”

“Like a rugged cowboy.”

Laughing, I glance at the blonde at her side and then back to Kinsey. “That kiss have you coming back for more?”

Her cheeks blush. “I was actually hoping you can help me.”

“Hold on.” I dismount, stroking the side of the horse's neck and grab the reins to keep her from wandering. “What can I do for you, darlin’?”

Her friend gags, turning away from us as Kinsey’s blush deepens. She scowls at her friend before looking back at me. “Ignore her, but I was hoping you can get Colt for me.”

My fingers tighten on the straps, and I keep the smile on my face to ignore the flash of hurt pride. It makes sense for her to be looking for Colt. She’s had the most interactions with him, and I haven’t had a chance to set up that second date with her.

“Yeah. I’ll get him. It may take a few minutes,” I say, patting Jeanie’s neck before walking her closerto the fence. “I need to put this sweet girl away and then look for him.”

Kinsey’s face softens, looking at the mare. “Can I come with you?”

“What the heck? What about me? I do not have boots for walking on mud,” her friend exclaims.

“Brielle, I mean this from a place of love. Suck it up,” Kinsey says with an eye roll.

I smirk, holding out my hand for Kinsey to climb the fence. When she lands right before me, my cock twitches at her grin, and I have to bury the urge to kiss her.

“Hey.”

Her eyes twinkle, and a soft smile graces her lips. “Hey.”

Brielle snorts behind her, and we both turn to watch her climb the fence. I help the blonde just as she swings over the top rail. An impatient huff has me smiling over my shoulder.

“You’re my number one girl. You know that,” I coo at Jeanie.

“Can I pet her?” Kinsey asks, watching Jeanie hesitantly.

“Reach out slowly. Let her come to you.” I put my hand on her snout and then rub down her neck.

Kinsey smiles when Jeanie rubs against her hand gently. “Oh wow.”

“Yeah, she’s a sweetheart. But let’s get her home because if she’s out here, she prefers to be moving about,” I say and start to lead Jeanie back to the barn. “What has you coming to see Colt?”

Kinsey’s smile drops, and I can pick up hints of her scent turning bitter. My heart picks up, knowing something is affecting her mood negatively.

“I just need to talk to him,” she says, deflated.

CHAPTER 15

DALLAS

Tying off the last of the fence, I lift the bottom of my shirt and wipe the sweat from my face.
