McKayla and I, on the other hand, shared the same reaction: equal parts laughter and groaning.

“What? What?!” Sofia shrieked, a pink hue in her cheeks.

“Nothing,” I said. “In fact, that was so cute, I think my eyes just rolled into the back of my head.”

“Again and again and again,” McKayla added, getting in on the action.

Sofia laughed, stunned. “You gu~ys! I stood up forbothof you, y’know! And now you’re teaming up against me?”

“Sorry! Don’t get me wrong. I think you’re insanely cute. It’s just …” McKayla trailed off.

“It’s a lot,” I said, completing her thought.

McKayla looked up at me, a spark of mischief in her eyes. “What’s this? We finally agreed on something?”

“Yeah. We probably shouldn’t get used to it, though,” I said, nudging her with my elbow.

“Oh, trust me, hon. I wasn’t planning on it,” she countered, and took a sip of her beer.

“How do you like Pest, by the way?” I asked.

“I gotta say, I actually like it,” she said. “It’s tart and juicy.”

“Tart and juicy? Sounds like something I could buy at your store.”

“Oh, lord,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Just when I paid you a compliment, too.”

Sofia jumped forward. “Please tell me more about howwe’rea lot, while the two of you use the most thinly-veiled ‘rivalry’ ever as an excuse to blatantly flirt with each other.”

“I amnotflirting! Why does everyone keep saying th—” McKayla bit her tongue.

My eyebrow quirked.Oh, really? What’s everyone saying?

But whatever McKayla was about to say, she washed down with a big swig of Pest instead.

“So you’re gonna deny it while you’re literally slurping downhis essence?” Sofia teased.

McKayla started to turn bright red. “Sof! Aaah! Why’d you have to take it there? Now I can’t even drink it anymore.” She thrust the rest of her glass into my hand. “Can we take a look around the party now or what? I’m done ‘flirting,’” she said, slathering sarcasm all over that word.

Connor agreed. “Yeah, why don’t we go say hi to everybody else?”

“Thanks for the beer, Brett,” Brock said.

Before they walked off, I leaned closer to McKayla and whispered in her ear. “Hey.”

Her eyebrows met as she looked up at me. “Yeah?”

“I’ll come find you later, okay?”

She recoiled, her nose wrinkling as she pretended to be annoyed. “Why? What for?”

“Because,” I said with a grin. “Maybe I wanna talk. Maybe I might like you?”

She rolled her eyes. “You don’t like me, Brett. And I don’t like you. So don’t waste either of our time.”

And with that, the four of them walked off.

I don’t believe you,I thought, my eyes glued to her sexy, hip-swinging walk. And I can’t wait until I get you alone.
