“Oh yeah? How so?” I asked as we walked up the driveway.
“Yeah, do tell,” Sofia said.
“He’s starting a beer company,” Connor said.
My heart stopped.
Wait.
“A beer company?” I asked, stunned, my head swimming.
That hit a little too close to home, based on what little else I knew about the guy.
What are the odds?
“He is?” Sofia asked. I could tell by the lack of revelation in her voice that she wasn’t thinking what I was thinking. “How come I didn’t know that?”
Brock and Connor shrugged.
“I mean, it’s not likehe’sdoing all the work,” Connor said. “He just opened his wallet to make it happen.”
“But I could’ve sworn we told you, Sof,” Brock said.
“Yeah, we definitely told you,” Connor chimed in. “’Cause that’s what the party’s for. The brewer he hired finished all the beers, and this is like, the big tasting. We get to try all the beers before anyone else.”
Sofia folded her arms. “You didn’t tell me any of that. You were too busy playing that video game.”
“Sorry,”the boys said sheepishly.
We stepped up to the porch, and Brock rang the doorbell.
“So … is Showtime starting a beer company?” I asked, a hitch in my throat. “Or is he starting abrewery?”
“Right, it’s a brewery, yeah,” Connor said. “Whatever ya wanna call it.”
“It’s a brewery and restaurant, actually,” Brock said.
Sofia turned to me slowly, her mouth open and her eyes huge.
Ah, she finally understood.
“Hold up,” she whispered. “Mac, tell me you aren’t thinking …?” She trailed off, unable to finish the rest of her frightening thought; it was too unspeakable to put into words.
But yes, Iwasthinking it.
And that horrifying thought became my reality a second later when the door opened, and a familiar face answered the door.
“Hey, Showtime!”the boys roared, greeting their teammate with big, back-slapping hugs.
“Hey, boys,” the man known as ‘Showtime’ said. He flashed his handsome smile and welcomed us into his home.
I hid behind Sofia, hoping our host wouldn’t notice me. Because the man everyone was calling Showtime? Well, … obviously, he was Trust Fund Guy.
Whoops.
Which I guess meant he wasn’t a trust fund kid after all.
No,I thought with a heavy sigh,he’s a pro athlete.
