Paulina wiped at her sleepy eyes. “Holy crap. It’s eleven already?”
“Yup! It’s time to start your new life, sis!”
“Whoops. You should’ve woken me earlier.”
“Oh, I couldn’t do that—not after your flight got in so late! Sorry I wasn’t awake when you made it here, by the way. I wish I could’ve picked you up, but I was so tired I didn’t trust myself behind the wheel.”
She wished Sasha could’ve picked her up—she couldn’twaitto see him again—but he was currently on the road with the rest of the Devils. The team was arriving in Dallas later that afternoon.
Paulina shrugged. “No problem. I tried to wake you up, but you wouldn’t move. I thought about carrying you to your bed, your body was like a freakin’ bag of rocks.”
Piper snickered. “Always have been, eh?”
“Yeah,” Paulina said, “but I thought your narcolepsy meds made your sleeping habits a little more normal?”
“Yeah, normally,” Piper said, and quickly changed the subject. “So how do you like your new room, roomie?”
Paulina was moving into Piper’s old bedroom. Ever since Piper and Jax became an item, Piper moved into Jax’s bedroom, and her old bedroom became the spare bedroom for their guests to sleep in. Their condo was plenty spacious. Her bedroom even came with its own bathroom.
“It’s um, really nice,” Paulina laughed. “Might take some time getting used to.”
“Yeah? This?” Piper looked around her bedroom and laughed. “I mean, it’s not bad. But if you think this little place is nice, just wait until you see Niko’s palace at the Ritz.”
“I’ve seen bits and pieces of it when we video chat,” Paulina said. “Is it as big as it looks?”
“It’s huge! He lives like a king in that place.” Piper lowered her voice. “Do you think you’ll be spending the night at his place tonight?”
“Hell, Ibetterbe! We’re sexting each other every night and I haven’t gotten laid in two weeks … I’m dyin’ here, sis.”
Piper laughed. “Okay. Just asking. Because it’s been a few days since I’ve seen Jax, too.” She bit her lip. “And, y’know.”
Paulina finished her thought. “And you want to get that bomb athlete dick, too. Trust me, I get it. It’s addictive.”
“God, it issoaddictive!”
The sisters shared a bawdy laugh.
“We’re so ridiculous,” Paulina said.
“I know. And I’msoexcited to have you as part of the crew.” Piper peeled the comforter off of Piper. “But if you wanna look all hot for Niko, then we need to get moving, kiddo.”
Paulina stretched, her bones stiff and achy after her airport fiasco. “Okay.”
“Hey, you don’t mind driving us today, do you?” Piper asked.
“As long as you navigate, because I don’t know my way around town, obviously.”
“Sweet! Thanks.”
“But wait … why?” Paulina asked, slowly beginning to realize that something strange was up. “You didn’t want to drive to the airport last night because you were too tired. Today, you don’t want to drive at all. What’s going on? Are you afraid of driving now or something?”
“Nah, I’m not afraid,” Piper said with a wave of her hand. “I just try to avoid driving when I’m not on my meds.”
Paulina’s eyes narrowed. “And why aren’t you on your meds?”
Piper bit her lip. “Well, see, that’s what I wanted to tell you. I wanted to wait until Jax was back to tell you, buuut—”
In the days before Paulina’s flight to Dallas, Piper had been hinting that she had something she wanted to share when the time is right.
