“It’s just so hard not to be freaked out about everything right now, Sasha.”
“I understand.”
She turned her big, gentle eyes to him. “So … you don’t think I’m a horrible liar?”
The truth was, whatever fears or doubts he’d had a minute ago that she’d lied to him about birth control had completely vanished. Her concern for the baby’s well-being was far too genuine for this to be anything but an accident. Someone who’d planned to trap him with a baby wouldn’t have continued to take her pills, either; she would’ve stopped taking them immediately.
“No,” he said. “I believe you.”
She let out a breath of relief. “And you’re not mad at me? You don’t hate me?”
“Why would I hate you?!” he asked, appalled.
“Because I told you I was on the pill, but I didn’t eventhinkthat it might fail because I got sick that morning. It’s my fault I got pregnant.”
“It could’ve failed no matter what. One percent chance is still a chance.”
She nodded. “Yeah … but …”
He shook his head before she aired any more worries. “We made this baby together, Paulina.”
“Thank you,” she said softly.
He paused. “Can I say something, though?”
“Of course. Always.”
“You said it was your fault you got pregnant,” he said. “I don’t like it when you use that word. ‘Fault.’ ”
“Why not?”
“Because that makes it sound like the pregnancy is a bad thing.”
“So … you think it’s a good thing, then?” she asked. A glimmer of hope began to sparkle in her eyes.
He grabbed her hand and answered her question with one of his own. “Remember when we hung out in the barn, and you told me everything happens for a reason?”
“Yeah.”
“Why would this be any different?”
She went silent—he had a point.
“Actually, a lot of things from the wedding are starting to make sense to me now,” he said.
“Like what?”
“Many of my teammates are wanting to have babies. Jax and your sister, Reavo and my sister, Dane and Austen, Hath and Emma …”
“I know. Actually—can I tell you something really quick?”
“Sure.”
“Piper just found out she’s pregnant, too. We got knocked up right around the same time—who knows, maybe even the same night?”
Niko’s eyes widened. “Really?! She’s pregnant, too?! Does Big Rig know?”
She nodded. “Yeah, he knows. Piper told me I can tell you, but don’t tell anyone else yet, because it’s still too early to announce.”
