“Yeah, and nowshe’s telling all her friends to get on Soulmate, too. She can’t believe I know you in person!” Ainsley snapped her finger. “Oh, that reminds me! She wanted me to tell you that if things keep going smoothly with this new boy, she’d be willing to do some kind of testimonial for your app, if you’re interested.”
“Aww.” I cracked a smile. “Tell her I’m touched by her offer and I wish her all the best with her new beau.”
After a moment’s lull, Austen interjected, “Wait. Does that mean you’re not going to take Ainsley’s friend up on her offer?”
“Yeah, don’t miss out!”the other girls unanimously agreed.
I chuckled. “I appreciate the support, guys, but there’s no point. Soulmate’s done for.”
“What?”
“Why?”
“C’mon,” I said, “we all know what happened with the promo.”
Katerina didn’t miss a beat. “Oh, but it wassocute!”
“Yeah, what’s the problem with the promo?” Emma asked. “That whole video was wholesomeAF.”
“People think the promo was rigged,” I said.
“Rigged?” Austen repeated. “No way. You both looked so surprised when it happened.”
“It wasobviouslynot the result you two were expecting,” Katerina said, stifling a laugh.
“I’m just telling you guys what people on the internet said. Everyone got super mad, said Soulmate was a scam, and swore they were deleting the app.”
“It was probably just a few angry loudmouths,” Ainsley said. “But I’d bet you anything there are alotmore people like my friend, who didn’t make a stink about the promo, and gave your app a shot anyway.”
Austen agreed. “Yeah. Don’t listen to those jerks. Besides, what good has ever come from the internet mob? None. You can take my word for it.”
Ainsley snickered. “And mine, too.”
I sighed. “I don’t know. Maybe you’re right. I just don’t have any faith in Soulmate anymore.”
“Why not?” Emma asked.
“I mean, it paired me withJax,first of all,” I said, trying to be convincing. “So how accurate could it really be?”
“Hm, yeah, really makes you wonder,” Emma said with a healthy sprinkling of sarcasm.
“Speaking of Jax,” Austen began, “when we picked you up from your room, I couldn’t help but notice you two are sharing the same bed. Is that how you do things back at your condo, or …?”
“No,” I muttered. “It was a hotel room mix-up. We were supposed to have two queens, but—”
The girls shared a doubtful laugh.
“Oh, yeah right!”
“Heard that one before!”
“Jax seriously pulled that move on you?!”
“Spill the deets already! You guys boning or what?”
Pierre, kneading my shoulders like a ball of dough, came to my rescue. “You’re tensing, Miss Piper.”
I sighed. “Can we talk about this later? You heard the man—I’m tensing!”
