“Because that would only make things weirder.”

“He probably thinks YOU’RE being weird, considering you’re playing with your phone the whole road trip.”

“He was already acting weird before I started texting you, so no.”

“Maybe he’s being weird because he’s trying to figure out exactly how he’s going to confess his love for you during your spa retreat together.”

I laughed out loud, earning another glance from Jax. Wanting in on the joke, he wore a curious smile. “What’s so funny?” he asked.

But of course I couldn’t tell him.

“Oh, nothing,” I muttered. “Just a funny text.”

Dejected, he gave a small nod. “I see.”

Ugh … I didn’t want him to feel bad … but Ireallycouldn’t tell him.

“It’s just sister talk,” I said. “Inside jokes and stuff. You wouldn’t get it.”

“Sister talk,” he repeated, sounding almost skeptical. “Gotcha.”

Was I just imagining things, or did he not believe me?

More weirdness.

Whatever.

Returning my attention to my phone, I tapped out a simple reply: “Good one. That made me LOL for real.”

“Seriously though. Think about it. Just the two of you on a romantic getaway? It sounds like the perfect setup.”

“Trust me, the vibe is NOT romantic at all right now. It’s pure cringe. And by the way, it’s not JUST the two of us. It’s an entire hockey team and their ladies.”

“I know all that. Obviously, I meant just the two of you in a hotel room together.”She included an over-the-top string of emojis: red lips, hearts, flames, peaches, eggplants, and fireworks.

“A hotel room with two beds,” I replied, adding some emojis of my own: a chilly snowflake nestled between two beds.

“Oooo, how much you wanna bet that Jax has a plan, and you’ll have that really obvious hotel room mix-up? The one where you’re SUPPOSED to have a room with two beds, but gosh darn it the stupid hotel must’ve screwed the reservation up, because they put you in a room with only ONE bed, so now you simply have to sleep together?”

With a gulp, I glanced over at Jax again. He wouldn’t pull that move with me, would he? I’d like to think he’s, well, smootherthan that … although, to be fair, he’s beenanythingbut smooth thus far today.

“I hope not,” I wrote back. “That’d be pretty lame.”

“I think it’d be cute and hott,” she wrote.“Either way, whether your room has one bed or two, you realize the ball is in your court now, right?”

“What do you mean?”

“You have to make the first move.”

“Why?” I quickly added, “Not that I’ll be making any moves on him.”

“Because he’s made a move on you TWICE now. And you’ve rejected him both times.”

“So what?”

“Put yourself in his shoes! If you were him, would YOU keep hitting on a friend who’s already turned you down twice?”

“If I really wanted this friend, sure, why not?”
