No way he wanted to askmeto that party.

And even if hedid—which he obviously didn’t!—he’d only ask me to go as a friend.

Of course he’d only ask you to go as his friend, dummy,I immediately thought, scolding myself. That’s what you are.

Katerina poked me, snapping me out of my trance. “Piper?” She pointed at the skillet. “The gravy’s boiling over.”

“Oh!” I quickly turned off the heat. “Caught me daydreaming.” I chuckled. “Whew. Sorry, I’m running on empty today.”

She smiled. “I understand.”

I plated her biscuits and gravy and we sat at the dining room table. She took one bite and her eyes fluttered with ammmm-nnn. “Oh my God.”

I knew that feeling.

“Isn’t it good?!” I asked.

“It’s delicious,” she said, sounding stunned.

I beamed. “I know. I’m so proud of that boy.”

Between bites, we made small talk. Eventually, our small talk circled back to the WAG party.

“You know,” she said, “I hope this doesn’t weird you out, but you’re something of a hot topic of gossip among the WAGs.”

I bobbed my head, not at all surprised. “Let me guess: everyone wants to know about me and Jax, right?”

“Yes! What’s thedeal,sister?”

I laughed—it was the same thing with the WAGs back in Colorado. Why did people have such a hard time believing us? “We’re just friends.”

Her brow knitted and her lip jutted out in disappointment. “Aw.Really?”

“Really,” I said. “Sorry to disappoint.”

“No, no, it’s fine. You two just seem so—I don’t know—so perfect for each other. Like you’re already a couple.”

I forced a smile. “Well, that’s why we’re such good friends.”

“But have you ever—” she cut herself off. “No, nevermind. I’m sorry. I’m prying into your personal matters.”

I shrugged. “It’s okay, Katerina. You can ask me whatever you want.”

“Thank you,” she said with an appreciative nod. “If this is over the line, you don’t have to answer.” She lowered her voice to a whisper. “Have you two ever slept together?”

“Like in the same bed?” I knew what she wasreallyasking, but I continued before she gave me her answer. “Because yeah, that used to happen all the time—we’d be hanging out in his room when I’d suddenly get tired and pass out right in his bed. Sometimes, he was too tired to move me, so he’d just sleep next to me. That’s actually the story on how I ended up getting diagnosed with narcolepsy, too: Jax convinced me that my sleeping habits weren’t normal, so I went to a doctor, and the rest is history.”

“Aw, that’s so sweet.” She grinned, knowing I’d just dodged her question. “But the question I was asking, Piper, is if you two have ever had sex.”

“Nope.”

“Fooled around?”

“Never,” I said.

“Really? You haven’t even kissed?”

I shook my head. “Not once.”
