“Something special for the lady.” Olivia made a knowing grin. “Follow me.”
She led us to the women’s fashion. With Ainsley in good hands, I grabbed a seat in a leather chair and caught up on my text messages. Reavo was busily planning a get-together for dinner in the Devils group chat and trying to get everyone over to his house. Almost everyone was going to be there.
I tapped out a reply. “Can I bring a girl, Reavo?”
Which was a bigger request than you might realize. Because the Devils, well, we’re like a family—everyone gets together. And you wouldn’t bring a girl you weren’t serious about to family dinner.
Reavo’s reply was instant: “Of course, bro. Everyone’s always welcome. You know that.”
The replies came flooding in from my teammates.
“Wait, Vaughny’s bringing a girl? It’s her, isn’t it?”
“Cinderella?!”
“VAUGHNSY?! WHO IS SHE?! DONT LEAVE US HANGING”
“lol im gonna be so disappointed if it’s not cinderella”
I read the messages, laughing silently, wondering if introducing Ainsley to these idiots was a terrible idea.
“1) Yes it’s her. 2) Please stop calling her that, you’re going to freak her out.”
An avalanche of replies came rolling in, line by line.
“HOOOOOOOLY SHIT”
“Nice! Can’t wait to meet her.”
“LMAO YES!!!!!!!”
“congrats dude”
“HOT STREAK INCOMING”
After finally getting those boneheads to swear to be on their best behavior, I pocketed my phone and went looking for Ainsely. I found Olivia patiently waiting outside the fitting room.
I knocked and leaned up against the door, listening for her voice. “I’ve got two questions, Ainsley.”
“Yes?”
“One, would you like to have dinner at my teammate Reavo’s place tonight? He’s having the whole team over.”
“Yeah, sure!”
“Awesome,” I said with a pump of my fist. “Two, how’s it going in there?”
“It’s going alright.”
“Find something special yet?”
I heard an uncertain sigh through the door. “I think so? Maybe? I guess I’m not sure what ‘special’ means, exactly.”
“That’s a no, then,” I said. “Because you’ll know it when you see it.”
“Oookay.” I could hear it in her voice—she was lost.
“Let’s see if I can find something. I’ll be right back,” I said, heading for the women’s section.
