“Yikes. Was he okay?”

“Yeah, he was fine, just a little pissed. Anyway, then my girlfriend starts shouting, saying that since I was so happy to share private details of our sex life, she had an announcement for everyone to hear. And that’s when she told everyone that I gave theworsthead she’d ever had in her life. Said it was sloppy, no good, and I had no idea what I was doing under the hood. All my teammates and her girlfriends were dying with laughter.”

“And you actually believed her? Dane! She was lashing out because you made her feel bad aboutherskills.”

He shook his head. “No, see, that’s what I thought, too. I didn’tbelieve her. I told everyone she was lying. But her friends backed her up. They said it was true, that she complained to them about my shitty oral all the time. I couldn’t believe it—if I wasn’t doing it the way she liked, then why wouldn’t she just tell me? I figured no one could be that dumb, that she had to be lying. So I told everyone that they wouldn’t believe how loud that girl would scream assoonas I started going down on her—sorry, TMI again, but it’s important.”

“Don’t worry. I asked. I want to know.”

“Well, then shetold everyone that she faked it every single time just to get me to stop—and that’s why she ‘came’ so fast every time. Still, I didn’t believe her. I told everyone again that she was full of shit.” Dane shook his head. “Then she acted like she was having an orgasm, right there in the bowling alley. And that place was packed, too, because it was a Friday night. All the other lanes around us stopped bowling and stared right at us. When she was done, the whole place burst into a round of applause to mock us.”

“That sounds a little awkward.”

“Yeah. Sure was.”

“So you guys broke up after that?”

“Well, yeah. I couldn’t be with her after she made me look like a chump in front of the whole team and all those people. I told her we were done and stormed out of there.”

“Did she chase after you?”

“Oh, yeah. She tried to get me to take her back every single day until the day I left Brampton for Dallas.”

“And ever since, you’ve refused to go down on a girl?” Austen asked, tickled.

He nodded. “Can’t trust a girl to tell me if she even likes what I’m doing or not, so what’s the point?”

Austen touched her hand on his thigh. “Aw. You really are a sensitive guy, aren’t you?”

“Hell, I dunno.”

“Thanks for telling me that story.”

“Yeah, sure. I figured you should know. I don’t want to disappoint you.”

“I’m sure you’ll be fine.” She smiled.

She told Dane to slow as they neared her apartment building. “This is it. Park here.”

Chapter 37

Austen

Austen’s heart raced as she led Dane by the hand to the second floor of her walk-up apartment. He always had so much to say, but on the way up the stairs, he didn’t make a sound. She could sense his nervousness. It struck her as absurdly cute. Who would’ve ever guessed that the hockey star, so confident in all his abilities, was so afraid to fail at this one thing?

She wasn’t worried that he’d be nearly as bad as he feared. She didn’t believe that anyone who wasthatconcerned with doing a good job, could possibly be bad. She thought the most likely explanation was simple: he’d hurt his ex that night, and she only wanted to hurt him right back. She hadn’t realized what a sensitive guy he was, deep down.

Besides, simply thinking about Dane between her thighs had gotten her plenty worked up already. With every step, she could feel the damp heat that was slowly spreading through her crotch. If he hadanytalent in that tongue at all, she knew she’d be screaming his name.

She unlocked the door and opened it a crack, but she paused to warn him before they entered. “It’s really not much, okay?”

“I told you, I don’t care about that,” he said. “I only want you.”

He wrapped his arms around her and leaned in for a kiss. She stood on her tiptoes to kiss the athlete back. They stumbled through the front door, their lips never separating.

Dane didn’t even bother to shut the door behind him. He advanced on Austen with his demanding and aggressive kisses until he’d backed her up against the wall. He stapled her to the wall with his hips, which rocked against her. Every inch of her body felt the force of his weight, pressing her, pinning her, against the wall, as their tongues touched and tussled. She had nowhere to go, no room to breathe, and she loved every second of it. Like fuel thrown on a fire, her kisses burned hotter and brighter.

“Dane!” she gasped between kisses. “Shut the door!”
