Oh. Right.

Those wereDane’sfingers, and he was in a lot of pain at the moment.

Austen snapped out of her trance and slid the door open as fast as she could. Dane was freed. He hobbled inside, clutching his hand against his belly and swearing under his breath.

“A-are you okay?” she asked.

“Fuck,” he said quietly. “I think it’s bad.”

“Lemme see.”

Hesitantly, he showed her. The sight of his palm, squished and bending at unnatural angles, made her stomach flop with nausea.

Oh my God. What have I done.

Panic set in.

“I amsosorry!” Austen shrieked. “I didn’t mean to do that, I swear! Oh my God!”

“I know you didn’t. Just stay calm. I need your help.”

“What can I do?”

He pointed at the freezer. “Get me an ice pack.”

She ran to the freezer, wrapped an ice pack in a tea towel and hurried back to Dane’s side. He held it against his hand and cursed some more. “I can’t move my fingers at all. Fuck.”

“I think I broke your hand, Dane,” she whimpered, pressing herself into his side. “I’m so sorry.”

His teammates came through the door, still soaking wet and dripping pool water all over Dane’s hardwood floors.

“Lemme see!”

“Jesus!”

“She broke D’s hand!”

“What the fuck did you do that for?”

“Haven’t you fucked him up enough?”

“Why don’t you just get the hell out of here already!”

“He’s never gonna play hockey again!”

One by one, Reaves grabbed his teammates and flung them outside, just like he was breaking up a fight on the ice. “Get back outside, idiots! You’re dripping water all over his goddamn wood floor!”

He shut the door, and it was just the three of them.

“Thanks, Reavo,” Dane said.

“No prob.” Reaves stepped closer to Dane. “Lemme see the damage.”

Dane showed him his hand.

“Fuck. That’s bad.”

“Yup,” Dane said.
