The weekend came and went quickly. Since it’s the start of the quarter, many students went home, so Lydia and I got acquainted with our fellow mortal friends. A few of them are immortal groupies, but most of us have a solid head on our shoulders and are already plotting to get this stupid mortal seminar canceled.

Ten people is not a lot of elbow grease for a mutiny, but if we can get under Mr. Wright’s skin, we might be able to at least get a new teacher, one that doesn’t believe short skirts are reason enough for murder.

Lydia and I run down the hill to the main building, our bags in one hand, our cauldrons in the other. My knotty hair flies around my face since I didn’t get a chance to tame it into a braid or a bun. This early time slot is a bitch, but I’m sure I set that alarm last night.

Hands braced on my knees, I catch my breath by the entrance of the classroom and check the time. We’re still three minutes early, and Deveraux isn’t there yet. Thank God. “How come the alarm didn’t ring?”

Lydia shakes her head. “No idea.”

I eye Blane and Bailey suspiciously. After the stunt they pulled on Lydia last week, I know they enjoy messing with mortals.

“Hey, Winslow,” Trent greets me.

“Hi.” I stop by his desk in the second row, my spot out front currently occupied by Naomi. The pixie is flirting with Cole, so I can spare a minute.

Trent runs is hand nervously into his brown locks. “I’m sorry for the other night. I didn’t want to come off as a creep. We vampires are a bit intense, especially when we’re hungry.”

“You’re fine,” I wave dismissively.

He arches a playful brow. “So you’ll go out with me next Saturday?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Come on. What do I have to do? We have Duel tomorrow. I’ll beat up Flynn just for you.”

I laugh like he’s being silly but touch his arm playfully, the universal signal forchase me, I’m interested.

I’ve been practicing my silence spell all weekend. Only half the students will be evaluated today, the other half on Thursday, but there’s no way to know which half. Teams are pitted against one another. If both teammates manage to cast their spell successfully, the best team receives an A, and the other a passing grade.

Naomi is still sitting in my spot. Her blond hair falls in perfect ringlets around her face, and I comb my fingers through my hair, trying to smooth down the mess.

She touches my teammate’s arm to the point of groping him and giggles. To my surprise, Cole is not welcoming the attention. Despite the fact that her pushed up pink bra is clearly visible through her shirt, her breasts all but spilling to the desk, Cole looks like he is about to shove her off the stool, his fist curled over his knee.

His angry gaze latches on to me. “Hey.”

I dump my bag on my desk.

Naomi cranes her neck around and reluctantly peels herself from my spot.

The nasty glare she throws my way sparks an itch in my shoulder blades, and I wonder if the pixie isn’t the one who disabled our alarm to get some face time with the Fae prince.

Cole throws his head back and groans. “I shouldn’t have kissed her. I’m not into her at all, and now she follows me around everywhere.”

I arch a brow. “Then why did you?”

He grunts and buries his head in his book, his elbow resting between us on the desk.

“Morning. I hope you’re all ready to work.” Devereaux strolls up to the front and sends random flares to the students that will perform today, creating puffs of red, blue, gold or green over the chosen teams. Cole and I get nothing, and my stomachs sinks. I would have loved to get the assignment out of the way.

Blane and Naomi are first, and the pair demonstrates a transmutation spell by turning Lydia’s necklace into a frog.

My knuckles clench. Every project is another opportunity for them to pick on us mortals.

When Flynn prowls to the front of the class, I know I’m next.

“Mel and I chose a vanishing spell,” he announces, rubbing his hands together like a cartoon villain.

“What will you make disappear, Mr. Verinos?” Deveraux asks.
