“Come, lay with me until the food is ready,” she tells me as we slide up the bed, getting under the covers. I snake my arm around her waist, pulling her back against me.
“Rest, my love,” I tell her, and her soft snores lull me to sleep with her.
Later that night, we’re all piled in the living room, wrapping Christmas gifts for the kids.
“Jesus, Jade, how much shit did you buy for these kids?” Jameson complains.
“You hush it. Our kids deserve the world, and I love spoiling them.” She laughs.
“It’s never-ending. Is there more in the garage?” Spade asks, and she grins.
“Holy shit, Babygirl.” He laughs as he fumbles with the wrapping paper.
“I see you guys have never done this before. You all suck at it.” She laughs, and I growl.
“I don’t suck at anything. This is just new. Give me a few and I’ll perfect it,” I tell her, and she shakes her head.
“Nope! You suck! Crease the edges and fold over. Don’t just crumble it,” she instructs, and Jameson clicks his tongue.
“What's the point of making it nice if they are just going to tear it up?” he asks, huffing because he really is making a mess out of it all.
“Ugh, you will never understand. It must be a guy thing,” she laughs. “Anyway, what do you guys think of O’s boyfriend Hayden?” she asks, and I roll my eyes.
“Not a fan,” Spade says.
“That’s because you know what he put her through. I could say the same for you three,” she says, and my eyes narrow.
“He’s okay, I guess,” I answer.
“Nope. I don’t think I’ll ever like him,” Jameson adds, and I laugh.
“You don’t like anyone,” I tell him, and he smiles.
“Exactly,” he says, and Jade shakes her head.
“Then your opinion means shit. I like him; he just still has some growing up to do,” she says, and I nod.
“Yep, and he better start now!” I say, and she smiles.
We spent the rest of the night wrapping gifts until our bodies ached from doing this on the floor. Why she suggested we do it this way is beyond me. We have an entire table we could’ve sat at comfortably, but no. Jade said this is the way we do it.Women!
As we all lay in our bed together watching Jade pump while a movie plays on the TV, my phone rings and my heart sinks into my stomach. I told everyone to leave us be unless there was an emergency. Reaching over to the nightstand, I pick it up and see it’s Ryder.
“It’s Ryder,” I say, and Spade pops up with a raised brow. Pressing the green button, I bring the phone to my ear.
“Hey, man. Everything okay?” I ask, and he takes a deep breath.Fuck!
“You guys need to get back. The cops are here. They have a warrant for Spade.” He growls, and my heart drops. Looking at the others who are already looking at me, I wipe my hand across my face.
“This can’t wait until tomorrow?” I growl.
“You know damn well it can’t. Get your asses back here and call that fancy lawyer of yours,” he spits.
“What? What is it?” Jade asks, but I hold my hand up.
“Ryder, do you know what the charges are?” I ask, holding my breath.
“Voluntary manslaughter,” he whispers, and my heart drops. My eyes collide with Spade, and my words are caught in my throat. How do I tell my brother that we have to leave here only to go home to the cops arresting him? How do I do that?“Put him on the phone, Dario,” he orders, but I can’t do it.
