Her tears flow more freely as she smiles down at me. “I’d love nothing more.”

Once we shower and dress,I walk Samantha to her car, and I climb into my truck. I follow her down the driveway and we turn toward Blossom Creek. I can’t help but smile as I watch her bob her head to whatever song is playing on the radio.

When I reach the turn for the high school, I blow the horn and wave to my girl. I pull into the parking lot of the school and kill the engine. Climbing out of my truck I pocket the keys and find the entrance Coach walked me through yesterday.

When I reach the office, Mrs. Koontz looks up to greet me. “Can I help you?”

“Hi, Mrs. Koontz, can you let Principal King know Cameron Hutchinson is here to see her?”

She grins and clicks her tongue at me. “I knew who you were. You haven’t been gone that long you know. We’ve been hoping you’d stop by.”

I laugh and rock back on my heels. “Well, it’s good to know you didn’t forget me.”

She smiles as she picks up the phone. “It would be hard to do with your name on half the awards in the football trophy case.” She presses a few numbers and then speaks into the receiver. “Cameron Hutchinson is here to see you.” She smiles and hangs up. “You can go on back.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Koontz.”

I walk back to Principal King’s office and knock on the open door to announce myself. She looks up and smiles, “Cameron, please come in.”

She gestures to one of the chairs and I take a seat. “Thank you for seeing me.”

She sets down her pen and folds her hands. “Of course. I’m hoping it’s a good sign you’re getting back to me so quickly.”

I chuckle at her comment. “Before I get to that, I’d like to remind you, I have no prior experience teaching high schoolers. Although, I have trained soldiers.”

“I understand. I still feel with your master mechanic qualifications and military training; you will be ideal for the position.”

I nod as I continue. “I’ve also not had any formal training coaching football. Everything I’ve learned has been from the coaches on the sidelines while I was on the field.”

“I understand that as well. Coach Markham and I have talked extensively about your lack of formal qualifications not only amongst ourselves but with the school board as well. There are certification courses you are required to complete before you can participate with the team as a high school coach. If you accept the position and complete those requirements, you would be able to work as our assistant coach.”

I nervously rub my hands down my thighs as I take in the information, she’s given me. “Well, it seems you’ve gone above and beyond on getting me cleared for this position.”

She smiles softly. “I was hoping to have your answer before I laid out all the information, I’ve given you.”

I chuckle at her frankness. “You certainly make it hard to say no.” I sit up straighter. “So, I’ll say yes. I’d be honored to accept the position.”

“Wonderful,” she says as she rises from her seat, and I do the same. She offers me her hand I accept giving hers a gentle shake. “Welcome to Dogwood County High School, Cameron.”

After filling out the necessary paperwork, I say goodbye to Mrs. Koontz and head for my truck. I mentally mark one thing off my to-do list, now it was time to tackle the second one. I climb into my truck, pull out my phone and start a video chat with my parents. It rings a few times before Momma answers still talking to Dad before she fully comes into view.

“Hey, Momma.”

“Cameron! Sweetheart, it’s so good to hear from you.” Her face transforms into a serious expression, morphing from a bright smile to a frown complete with wrinkled brows within seconds. “Is everything okay?”

I chuckle at her quick-change emotions. “Yes, everything is fine. Great, actually. Is Dad there? I have some news to share with the two of you.”

“How’s that?”

Cameron’s question pulls me from the spell he’s had me under since climbing on the ladder to hang the Kincaid Dairy banner on our booth in the exhibit hall. The sight of his muscles expanding and contracting under the Kincaid Dairy t-shirt he’s wearing has me far more distracted than I should be. I give my head a little shake and smile before my eyes check out his denim clad ass one more time. “Perfect.”

He ties the banner in place and climbs down to stand next me. I wrap my arm around his waist and lean my head on his chest. “Thanks for helping me set up.”

He draws me closer and kisses the top of my head. “Anything for you, babe.”

I smile at the endearment he’s recently started using and watch as he folds the ladder and turns it horizontal to carry it back out to the truck. “I’m going to take the ladder to the truck and run to the Legion Hall to get the ice cream. I’ll be back in a bit.”
